From Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Romero Zombies are zombies created by director George A. Romero, starting with the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. Romero introduced many staples in zombie pop-culture, reinventing the past portrayals that were associated with voodoo or vampires. Throughout his career he worked closely with make-up artist Tom Savini, who also did the gore effects and directed a Night of the Living Dead remake in 1990.

Romero Zombies are often credited as an inspiration for modern zombies, including Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

Movies[]

Night of the Living Dead (1968)[]

This is the first of George A. Romero's in his The Dead series, said by Romero to be shot on a budget. The film is in black and white and is shot in two locations. Zombies are first introduced in the opening of the movie, where Barbara and her brother Johnny are visiting a cemetery, and a mysterious figure is lurking in the background. As the tension in the scene escalates between the two, Johnny begins teasing her with the line "They're coming to get you Barbara!". The zombies he introduces are flesh hungry, and more prone to use blunt force as an attack and entering barricaded structures than in later entries in the series.

Dawn of the Dead (1978)[]

A larger budget film, Dawn of the Dead was shot in several locations including the Monroville Mall in Monroeville, PA. Now working with make-up artist Tom Savini, who also plays the biker gang member Blades in the film, Dawn of the Dead introduces more gore and follows a group of four who are thriving in the zombie-apocolypse. Zombies in this film are in larger numbers and are weaker. The video game series Dead Rising pays homage to Dawn of the Dead.

Day of the Dead (1985)[]

Day of the Dead introduces zombies gaining intelligence, and zombie overpopulation. The zombie in the film named "Bub", who is being held captive by scientist Dr. Frankenstein, shows signs of remembering things from his past life. Through classical conditioning, Frankenstein and his team uncovered that Bub remembers how to operate a Walkman,  shave, and due to his military history, he remembered use a gun and how to salute. At the end of the film, Bub shoots the main antagonist of the film.

Land of the Dead (2005)[]

Zombies are much smarter in this movie. They can operate iPod's, shoot weapons and walk under water.
