A Yonaki Baba is a type of yokai-hag from Japanese folklore who resemble ugly old women dressed in plain robes with unkempt hair, they appear outside the homes of those who have suffered tragedy and feeds on their suffering, weeping loudly throughout the night.

Yonaki Baba has a dark influence on those that hear it, sending them further into despair and a Yonaki Baba often signals even more misfortune for the individuals she decides to haunt.
In some tales she appears to truly mourn but in others she simply mocks people, in all tales she is a spirit of misfortune and despair, who signals great calamity for those who come in contact with her.
