Walpurgisnacht is the secondary antagonist of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise, and the minor antagonist of the first arc of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story. She is the most powerful witch in existence, symbolizing the fool who continuously spins in circles, and the archenemy of Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi.
History[]
Walpurgisnacht, like the other witches, was once an ordinary girl who became a magical girl after making a deal with Kyubey. Over time, her soul was fully corrupted by grief and despair, resulting in her becoming a witch herself. She would then absorb the powers of numerous other witches, transforming them into her minions and further fueling her evergrowing powers with their souls.
The same month that Homura Akemi met Madoka Kaname, she tried her best to protect her and prepare her in order to eventually fight and defeat Walpurgisnacht. After Walpurgisnacht successfully killed Madoka in episode 10, Homura contracted to reset the timeline 100+ times, but even though the girls managed to defeat Walpurgisnacht in every single one, it always lead to either Madoka's Soul Gem becoming tainted or both Madoka and Homura's Soul Gems being corrupted.
Once Walpurgisnacht arrived at the current timeline, a massive storm formed that forced the citizens to evacuate. Homura fought the witch but thanks to her nigh-invulnerability, she was ultimately defeated after a short amount of time. Eventually, Homura is shot down and her shield ran out of time. Luckily though, Madoka appeared just in time and finally made her wish to Kyubey, a wish to destroy all witches before they even became witches. And in the process, she finally became a magical girl. Using her newfound powers, Madoka vanquishes Walpurgisnacht, the witch's cog being the only thing left behind.
