Tetsuo Shima is the main antagonist of Akira, the groundbreaking manga by Katsuhiro Otomo and its 1988 anime film adaptation. He is a childhood friend of Shotaro Kaneda and a low-ranking member of Kaneda’s biker gang. Tetsuo’s life takes a drastic turn after a collision with an esper triggers his latent psychic powers. His transformation, both physical and psychological, forms the heart of Akira’s story, symbolizing uncontrolled power, inferiority complexes, and the devastating consequences of unchecked scientific experimentation. Tetsuo is often regarded as one of the most tragic and iconic characters in cyberpunk fiction.
Appearance[]
At the beginning of the story, Tetsuo is a short, wiry teenager with spiky brown hair and a youthful face, reflecting his immaturity and vulnerability. He typically wears the same biker gear as his gangmates, notably a red jacket and boots, though his outfit is generally plainer compared to Kaneda’s flashy style. His slight stature and somewhat frail physicality are visual cues to his feelings of inferiority, especially when compared to Kaneda.
As Tetsuo’s powers awaken and his mental state deteriorates, his appearance grows more menacing. His expressions become harsher, his eyes wilder, and his posture more commanding and unstable. In the climax of the film, after sustaining severe injuries during his psychic battles, Tetsuo’s body undergoes a horrifying transformation: he mutates into a grotesque, ever-expanding mass of flesh, organs, and mechanical components, resembling a gigantic, deformed fetus-like creature. This monstrous form represents both his inability to control his powers and his regression into a vulnerable, childlike state, culminating in a tragic loss of identity.
Personality[]
Tetsuo is a complex and tragic figure whose personality evolves dramatically throughout Akira. Initially, he is insecure, impulsive, and resentful, especially toward Kaneda. Though Kaneda treats him like a little brother, Tetsuo deeply resents always being seen as weak and dependent, harboring a desire to prove himself as strong and capable. These feelings of inferiority and frustration fester silently within him.
When Tetsuo acquires psychic powers, his fragile ego becomes inflated with newfound arrogance. No longer willing to be seen as weak, he lashes out violently at anyone he perceives as a threat or as patronizing him. His power quickly warps his mind, fueling paranoia, cruelty, and megalomania. Yet, beneath the anger and destruction, Tetsuo remains a scared, desperate boy who yearns for agency and freedom in a world that has always controlled him.
Even at his worst, there are moments where Tetsuo’s fear, confusion, and deep loneliness peek through the surface, highlighting his tragic nature. His mutation and eventual demise are not purely the fall of a villain, but the collapse of a fragile individual crushed under the weight of overwhelming power he was never prepared to handle.
Powers and Abilities[]
Tetsuo’s abilities stem from latent psychic potential that is forcibly awakened after his encounter with Takashi, one of the esper children. Once unleashed, Tetsuo develops a vast array of terrifying powers:
- Telekinesis: Tetsuo can move, destroy, and manipulate objects of massive size with his mind, from small debris to military tanks and even buildings.
- Psychic Barriers: He can create force fields to defend himself against attacks.
- Flight and Levitation: He gains the ability to hover and move freely through the air.
- Energy Projection: Tetsuo can unleash devastating psychic blasts capable of annihilating structures and causing large-scale destruction.
- Regeneration and Healing: Early on, he demonstrates rapid healing abilities, recovering from injuries that would be fatal to normal humans.
- Mutation and Biological Transformation: In the climax of the story, Tetsuo loses control of his own body. His powers cause uncontrollable cellular growth and mutation, resulting in his monstrous transformation into a massive, blob-like creature that fuses flesh and mechanical parts. This mutation symbolizes the unstable and self-destructive nature of his unchecked power.
Despite his godlike abilities, Tetsuo’s powers are inherently unstable. The human mind and body are simply not designed to contain such energy, leading to his catastrophic breakdown.
Story[]
Early Life and Biker Days[]
Tetsuo grew up alongside Kaneda in an orphanage in post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo. Kaneda naturally assumed the role of protector, often defending the smaller, weaker Tetsuo. While Kaneda saw their relationship as brotherly, Tetsuo grew to feel humiliated by always being the one protected, fostering deep-seated insecurities.
As teenagers, they joined a biker gang together. Tetsuo always played second fiddle to Kaneda, who was charismatic and assertive, while he remained in the background.
Awakening of Powers[]
One night, during a fight with a rival gang, Tetsuo crashes into Takashi, a psychic esper who had escaped government confinement. The contact awakens Tetsuo’s latent psychic abilities. Government forces quickly capture Tetsuo and conduct experiments on him, accelerating the development of his powers.
As Tetsuo’s abilities grow, so does his contempt for authority and for Kaneda. No longer wanting to be the "weak one," Tetsuo becomes increasingly violent, escaping government custody and leaving a path of destruction in his wake. His mind deteriorates alongside his increasing strength, and he begins to see himself as a godlike being.
Rise to Power[]
Tetsuo sets out to find Akira, the mysterious figure who had caused the original destruction of Tokyo decades earlier. Believing that understanding Akira’s power will grant him full control over his abilities, Tetsuo slaughters anyone who stands in his way, including members of his former gang and soldiers.
He eventually locates Akira, only to find that Akira had been dissected long ago and preserved in cryogenic storage. As Tetsuo’s body begins to fail him due to the overwhelming nature of his powers, his mutation starts.
Final Mutation and Death[]
In the climactic battle at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, Tetsuo faces off against Kaneda, the military, and the espers. His mutation accelerates uncontrollably, turning him into a gigantic, nightmarish mass of flesh and machinery.

Tetsuo's mutation
Desperate and in agony, Tetsuo calls out for Kaneda, symbolizing his regression to a helpless child needing aid. The espers, understanding that Tetsuo’s power must be contained, sacrifice themselves to create a singularity that absorbs Tetsuo (and Akira’s consciousness) into a new universe or dimension.
In the manga version, Tetsuo’s end is slightly different but equally tragic, involving a broader confrontation with the military and the emergence of a new psychic future for humanity.
