A Tatty Bogle is a type of goblin from Scottish folklore that acts as a kind of bogeyman figure in fields. Often disguising themselves as scarecrows, they acted as a type of mischief-prone genius loci and loved to startle and scare anyone that ventured too near, especially during the hours of night.
Due to this the word has become a common term for scarecrows in general in many parts of Scotland.
