Starmie is a Water/Psychic-type Pokémon and the evolved form of Staryu. Its body seems to resemble two purple starfish joined together at the back. The back rotates like a propeller to allow it to move through the water and the core on the front portion is adorned with a hexagonal red gem.

Starmie dwell in the deepest oceans, though they are rarely encountered in the wild. The back portion of a Starmie's body rotates 360 degrees, propelling it through the water. It can even allow Starmie to fly through the air for short periods.
The gem in Starmie's core glows in seven different colours and emits powerful electrical wave signals. These signals allow Starmie to communicate with each other, even over great distances. The core will cease glowing if Starmie dies or is otherwise rendered unconscious. Because of its body shape and habit of sending transmissions skyward, some people believe this Pokémon to be extraterrestrial.

- Rapid Spin - The back portion of Starmie's body constantly spins around to propel it through the water or air. It also prevents opponents from restraining it.
- Psybeam - Starmie fires a dazzling beam of energy from its gem core to inflict heavy damage.
- Recover - Starmie can quickly heal any injuries it sustains, unless its core is damaged.
- Surf - Starmie carves through the water to generate a powerful wave to wash away all opponents.
