El Silbón (English: The Whistler) is the spirit of a spoiled young peasant who was cursed by his grandfather to roam the earth for murdering his father.

Origin[]

After murdering his father, the man was punished with a neck warden (typical of the plains), while trying to flee he was bitten by a Tureko dog, to conclude the punishment his grandfather sprinkled a large amount of hot pepper on his wounds. The memory and mention of what happened frees people from being attacked by this wandering spirit known as the wigeon. El Silbón presents himself to drunks in a somber way. Other llaneros give way to tall, skinny man. he wears a hat and attacks the drunken and partying men, whom he sucks on the navel to drink their brandy. Tradition explains that when the wigeon arrives at a house at night, it unloads the bag and counts the bones one by one; if no one can hear it, a family member dies at dawn.

Another version says that it was a son who killed his father to eat his "asaduras". The boy was raised toñeco (pampered), he did not respect anyone. One day he told his father that he wanted to eat venison offal. His father went hunting to please him but he was slow to return. In view of this, the boy went to look for him and when he saw that he did not bring anything, he had not been able to hunt the deer, he killed him, took out the entrails and took them to his mother to cook them. As they were not softened, the mother suspected that they were her husband's "roasts". asking the boy, who confessed the truth. He immediately cursed him "for life." His brother Juan chased him with a "mandador", a chili pepper cap blew him and the dog "Tureco" spurred him on, chasing him to the end of the world and biting his heels.
