Saulot, who has also gone by the name Zao-Lat, is an ancient Kindred of the Third Generation who features in White Wolf Publishing’s World of Darkness setting.

History[]

During the time of the First City, the Second Generation vampire Enoch Embraced a young man who possessed the power of prophecy. This youth differed from the others of his generation in that he focused much of his attention on meditation and prayer, forever trying to find a way to quell the raging Beast that lurks in the heart of all vampires.

Despite feeling great discomfort with his undead condition, Saulot nevertheless created a small group of vampires to call his own, although these creatures, who would come to be Clan Salubri, were taken from the most compassionate of mortals, and were a peaceful lot, unlike the vampires sired by the rest of the Third Generation. Saulot was rumoured to have taken no part in the slaughter of the Second Generation by the Third which occurred at this time.

After the Great Flood, Saulot abandoned his meditative techniques, and travelled to the Far East in search of new ones. Many centuries passed, and eventually he returned to his Clan, now gifted with a third eye which he claimed gave him knowledge of a discipline which would quell the Beast. He named this path Golconda, and began to teach his Childer how to live in harmony with their supernatural needs.

After the collapse of the Second City through the infighting of his “siblings,” Saulot took to wandering the land and, shortly after the crucifixion of Christ, disappeared from history, hiding himself away and falling into a long, deep sleep.

This slumber was brought to an abrupt end when in 1133 members of the newly-formed Tremere bloodline, who had stolen the gift of unlife from captured vampires, uncovered his lair. The head of the bloodline, Tremere himself, knowing that his people required greater power in order to survive the wrath of the other Clans, diablerized Saulot, in essence drinking his soul and gaining the power of a Third Generation vampire. After ensuring the survival of his nascent Clan, Tremere soon after feel into a long sleep of his own.

However, what Tremere had not bargained on was the sheer might of will possessed by Saulot, and for eight centuries the two battled for control of Tremere’s body. Ultimately, Saulot won the conflict in the year 1998, and now he inhabits his would-be killer’s body, having retreated to a secluded castle deep in the Carpathian mountains, where he quietly urges others of his kind to seek Golconda themselves, and occasionally assists them on their journey towards it.
