Satan is a supporting character and one of the main antagonists of the adult cartoon series South Park. He is the gay ruler of Hell and the ex-boyfriend of Saddam Hussein as well as an occasional ally and friend of the Boys. He was voiced by Trey Parker.
Abilities[]
Satan has the same supernatural abilities that all other depictions of the Devil possess, he has super strength and is capable of black magic and is able to spread temptation to humans and travel between dimensions, he can also possess people, control fire, make soul contracts and has vast knowledge.
Appearance[]
Satan is a large red humanoid being who is very muscular, he wears black furry shorts and has a black belt with blue trimming and a belt buckle resembling a skull. Satan has black hooves, yellow horns and yellow eyes, his knees are outward whenever he walks or stands, Satan’s design takes some influence from the Greek Satyr which is part man and part goat.
Satan currently has less of a beard, his biceps are sturdier and he has grooves attached to his horns.
History[]
He first appears in the episode “Damien” where he fights Jesus in a boxing match with Satan almost winning until Jesus beats him after Stan manages to get him to regain confidence in himself, it’s later revealed that Satan bet on Jesus to win so he could be rich from the people and get real estate.
He appears in a portrait with Barbara Streisand in Barbara’s hideout in “Mecha-Streisand” although he doesn’t make a physical appearance.
In “The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka”, Satan is shown holding hands with Saddam Hussein in Hell as they meet Jesus’ producer.
He sings the song “Christmas Time in Hell” in the episode “Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics”.
In “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut”, Satan makes his second major appearance where he initially tortures Kenny when he arrives in Hell and plans to go to Earth and take it over once Terrance and Phillip are killed although he starts to get upset by Saddam’s inconsiderate nature and sings about wanting to live on Earth rather than in Hell, later after Sheila Broflovski kills Terrance and Phillip, Satan and Saddam arrive with Satan’s demons to take over Earth and he taunts Sheila for starting the whole thing in the first place before Saddam tries to claim everything as his and tells everyone to bow down to him while Satan calls himself the dark lord although Saddam ignores him and states that he wants to build a statue of himself where Cartman is standing, calling him a “fat kid” which angers Cartman to the point where he begins zapping Saddam and seems to accept when Saddam says “he can change” which shocks Satan only for Cartman to continue zapping him which leads to Saddam calling for Satan’s help although Satan snaps after Saddam continues insulting him, throwing the former dictator to his death on a jagged piece of rock in Hell below. He thanks Kenny, plays with Mr. Hat and goes back to Hell with Kenny and his Demons after accepting Chef’s offer to come back to South Park whenever he felt like it, restoring everything in the process.
In “Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?”, Satan enters a new relationship with a man named Chris who treats him better than Saddam did although Saddam is revealed to still be alive after the events of the movie and tries to get Satan back, Saddam later tries to ruin Satan and Chris’s dinner although Satan still thinks he’s attractive, unfortunately, Satan accidentally reveals his true feelings towards Chris and stands outside Saddam’s hotel room after making up an excuse.
In “Probably”, Satan accidentally sleeps with Saddam while drunk and becomes offended when Chris refuses to be upset, after Saddam and Chris keep killing each other and reviving to repeat it, Satan visits God and asks him for advice on who he should choose but God says Satan’s too dependent on relationships and other people for emotional stability and tells him to dump them both and learn to love himself, Saddam continues to harass Satan although Satan says he asked “an old friend” for a favor which leads to Saddam being forced to live with Mormons in Heaven much to Saddam’s dismay.
In “Freemium Isn’t Free”, Satan possesses Stan in order to defeat the Canadian Devil and goes to face his Canadian counterpart with him ultimately winning.
He gets summoned by Al Gore to fight and defeat ManBearPig and goes with the boys and Al Gore to the library to learn more about him in “Time To Get Cereal”.
In “Nobody Got Cereal?”, Satan later finds ManBearPig on Main Street and they start attacking each other but ManBearPig beats Satan and stabs him with his own horn, he convinces the boys to keep going before dying and turning into an Angel who goes to Heaven.
Personality[]
Satan is much more sympathetic than his biblical counterpart as he is a scapegoat who was abused by his boyfriend, Saddam Hussein and his love/sex life was pretty pitiful and complicated in general although he can be wrathful when torturing people who sinned and becomes angry after Saddam abused him for too long. He can also have standards as he doesn’t understand why Saddam makes everything in their relationship sexual and called out the real Steve Irwin when mistaking him for an imposter who dressed up to make fun of his death. He also fights against Beelzeboot and ManBearPig, proving that he is capable of doing good and can be seen as more neutral than evil. Satan is grateful towards Kenny for helping him realize that Saddam was only using him and seems to want other people’s company, being lonely.
Trivia[]
- Satan being killed by ManBearPig and later becoming an angel is supposed to be ironic considering the fact that Satan was originally one before betraying God in most religions.
