Sam (Trick 'r Treat)

Sam, or Samhain, is the main character in the 2007 horror film Trick 'r Treat. He is a demonic pumpkin-like creature who acts as an enforcer of Halloween rules and traditions, and is willing to do anything to make sure these rules are respected. Many fans say it could be that Sam is the incarnation of Halloween in a more modern sense.

Sam was the brainchild of director Michael Dougherty, who appeared first in the 1996 short, Season's Greetings, and then in the film "Trick 'r Treat." He was portrayed in the film by actor Quinn Lord.

History[]

Sam's name comes from Samhain, the origins of Halloween itself. He is depicted as a boy dressed in a Halloween costume, consisting of an orange pajama set, and a mask made from a burlap bag with buttons for eyes. Sam acts a lot like a child, he's mischievous and seems to love chocolate. Sam drags a dirty sack with him throughout the movie, but its contents are unknown, presumably sweet, although the bloodstains on the sack and the cat screeching as he drags it down the stairs would suggest otherwise. Despite his childish appearance, it is established that Sam is more demonic than he appears, concealing a pumpkin-shaped head that resembles a skull. Sam is the personified being of Halloween himself, as well as the enforcer of its traditions and rules.

Curiosities[]

  • Despite his childish appearance, apparently Sam is hundreds or thousands of years old and is known to many cultures around the world in one form or another. In the graphic novel "Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead," one of the stories is about a 19th century pioneer girl named Sarah who befriends an Indian tribe who lives on land her railroad father loves. develop. The tribal chief's daughter gives Sarah a handmade doll of Sam (whom the tribe refers to at one point as "The Great Autumn Spirit") that she says will protect her from harm. This leads Sarah to ask if he is a good spirit, and the chief's daughter replies, "I wouldn't say that. But the shaman told me that he is very old and very powerful."
