The Pugot Mamu is an evil version of the more famous Pugot spirits of Filipino folklore and mythology. While both resemble large humanoids with no head and a large mouth full of sharp fangs, a Pugot Mamu has evolved into a horrific man-eater that craves the flesh of children. In contrast the Pugot is a neutral being that feeds on snakes and chickens, never humans.

Pugot Mamu is a variant of the world-wide monster type known as the bogeyman and could devour children whole with its giant gaping mouth (which was situated on its open neck, otherwise lacking a head). It was often a very large creature, but could shape-shift into varied animals and hide in trees just like a regular Pugot. Also of note is that unlike a regular Pugot (which is treated as a spirit) a Pugot Mamu is a more physical creature, despite its fantastical powers.
