Possessed

The Possessed are a common type of enemy in the video game DOOM (2016). These gruesome undead creatures fulfill the same role as the former human enemies from the classic DOOM games.

Overview[]

The Possessed are the result of the initial Hellwave experiment conducted by Dr. Olivia Pierce, the main antagonist of DOOM (2016). Upon being exposed to Argent energy, most human beings are immediately killed, but some are instead mutated and transformed into animalistic undead creatures driven solely by instinct. Those who are transformed appear to have partially molten flesh which has fused to their clothing and whatever equipment was on their persons at the time of transformation. Their eyes have atrophied out of existence while their eye sockets have moved and joined to create a single gaping hole in the middle of the face.

When there is no immediate threat to them, the Possessed will simply stand around idly until motivated by the presence of live food or a potential predator. During the Mars incident, they would systematically attack and kill any living humans they encountered, dragging their victims' bodies away and piling them up to construct a Gore Nest. Such actions suggest that the Possessed are mere puppets to the will of more powerful demons who use them as simple slave labour. In fact, when Possessed eventually expire, their own bodies are used to further fertilize the Gore Nests they have built.

Types[]

There are multiple different variants of Possessed which are described below.

  • Scientist - This type of Possessed is recognized by the white laboratory coats they wear. They are slow and attack by simply scratching and biting. They can be killed relatively easily with any weapon, though can be quickly stunned with a single Shotgun blast to allow for a Glory Kill.
  • Worker - These Possessed are similar to the Scientists, but retain their original skull structure and thus have two eyeholes. They also have only one arm and are slower to attack, dealing less damage.
  • Engineer - These Possessed are former UAC engineers that have had the equipment they were carrying fused to their flesh during the Hellwave event. These creatures are somewhat more passive than the other Possessed, but when they do attack, they do so by charging at their prey and grabbing hold of them. The fuel tanks merged to their torsos then rupture and explode, destroying the Possessed and the intended victim. These creatures are still quite weak and their fuel tanks make for an obvious vulnerability. An ideal tactic is to lure several demons close to a Possessed Engineer then fire on the Engineer's fuel tank, killing all nearby enemies with the explosion.
  • Soldier - These Possessed were once soldiers that made up the private military force of the UAC. They wear white armour and helmets and are more resistant to damage, though still weaker than other demons. They are equipped with rifles that have been fused to their arms that fire pulses of Argent energy. They are best dealt with from a distance using the Assault Rifle.
  • Security - Former UAC NeoPhalanx security officers that have been altered by the Lazarus Wave. They wear similar uniforms to the Possessed Soldiers, but carry a shotgun on one arm. They also come equipped with energy-based riot shields to block attacks. The shield can be disabled if it absorbs too much firepower.
  • Unwilling - These Possessed behave exactly the same as the Scientists, but are notably different in appearance. Their bodies have been altered by demonic corruption over a lengthy period, resulting in bone growths covering their eyes, forearms and legs. Their torsos also appear to have been hollowed out, leaving only empty space where their digestive organs should be.
