Piranha Plants are vicious plant creatures that have frequently appeared throughout the Super Mario Bros. video games and other media. Appearing similar to triffids or Venus Flytraps, Piranhas appear as red bulbs with white spots atop a narrow stalk with barbed leaves. The bulb has fat white lips that open into a gaping mouth filled with pointy teeth. Piranha Plants are often found in large pipes scattered across the Mushroom Kingdom and other domains. They frequently pop in and out of these pipes and eat any creatures that go near them.
Despite being plants, Piranha Plants have been depicted as being sentient and capable of speech in a few appearances, though unlike several other enemies in the Mario series, they have never been shown forming societies. Piranha Plant characters such as Petey Piranha, Piranha Bean and Dino Piranha, among others, reveal that some Piranha Plants can have animal-like bodies, making them capable of walking. Mom Piranha, Dino Piranha, and Peewee Piranha are all depicted hatching from eggs, suggesting that Piranha Plants may be oviparous.
