Papyrus

Papyrus is the younger brother of Sans (confirmed by Toby Fox), and one of the main characters in Undertale. He seeks to capture a human to become a member of the Royal Guard.

History[]

Some time before the events of Undertale, Papyrus and his brother appeared one day in Snowdin Forest and settled there as residents. Later, Papyrus befriended Undyne and began training with her. Undyne says that for this to happen, Papyrus had to come at dawn to yell at her to train him, at first, Undyne sends Papyrus back to her house, but the next day she starts training him. Sans also comments that the two of them made their "battle suit" (as Papyrus knows it) a few weeks before Frisk came to the Underground for a costume party, he has not taken it off since then and to wash it he bathes with the suit on.

Neutral Route and Pacifista Route[]

Papyrus makes his first appearance in Snowdin Forest, where he proclaims that he will be the first to capture a human, unaware that the player was hidden behind a suitably outlined lamp like him, and chides Sans for not trying hard enough to prepare. their riddles. He worries about being the first to capture a human because he believes that by doing so his life will improve considerably, being finally recognized, loved by everyone asking him to be his friend, showered in kisses every morning, accepting him into the Royal Guard, and simply being very popular for everyone.

Papyrus meets the player face-to-face for the first time later in the forest, where Sans causes Papyrus to mistake a rock for a human only to later point out that there was a real human in front of the rock.

Papyrus opposes the player as an antagonist at the beginning in the story, setting riddle after puzzle, but soon his affection for the human grows, even going so far as to oppose fighting them when they finally face off in the farthest part of Snowdin Town. Trying to forget his new feelings, he begins the battle in hopes of achieving a better life once he captures the human. Papyrus will never kill the human, and if his HP is reduced to 1, he will simply capture him and place him in his shed, from where he can easily escape.

Finally deciding that the human is friendly, Papyrus allows him to continue towards the Waterfall, giving him advice on how to get out of the Underground and offering either a date at his house or hang out with him, depending on whether or not he chose to flirt with him, respectively, during their battle.

Upon returning to Papyrus's house, he will invite the human to pass his house and show the place if he explores himself inside. Entering his room and talking to him will start the event of the outing or the date where Papyrus admits never having had such an event, and preparing himself by reading a book of quotes from the library following the advice he gives him. Papyrus shows here his dating attire to show that the other person is interested in him, according to his dating book. During the event Papyrus will try to get the player to show his interest in him and his friendship or love. However, at the end of the meeting or date, Papyrus will realize that his love for the human is unrequited or that his friendship with them could take them too far and decides that they will be just good friends. Papyrus gives his phone number and sends the human back on his journey. From this point on, the player can call Papyrus on each room or route and will get interesting information about where he is or about some characters in the game from Papyrus's perspective and his own knowledge.

When the player crosses the Waterfall, Papyrus will be seen trying to dissuade Undyne from killing the human. She refuses and he is forced to help her then. Later, Papyrus contacts the player by phone in a suspicious way, asking him to confirm what garment he is wearing. Soon after, in another room, Undyne will ambush the player. After he has escaped, Papyrus will call again explaining that the information he was previously given was to mislead Undyne, telling her that the human was wearing a different garment than what Papyrus was told. Regardless of the answer that has been given to him previously, his plan will turn against him in some way or another even if the garment has been changed or not.
