The Outer Gods are beings which appear in H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.

All Outer Gods are different from one another, but most share some basic characteristics: they are immensely powerful entities who have existed for untold millennia, they have thought processes and personal goals which are completely incomprehensible to the mortal mind, and they have physical forms the mere suggestion of which is enough to drive a man insane. In addition, due to their long war with the Elder Gods, most are currently either imprisoned in some remote location or completely locked out of our plane of existence, although all are able to exert a certain amount of influence through their considerable psychic abilities.

Whilst the Outer Gods have motivations which we cannot understand, the majority of these celestial entities are inimically hostile to all other life. As a result of this attitude, the Outer Gods are generally thought of as "evil" by other races, while their ancient adversaries the Elder Gods are generally believed to be "good," although both species tend to display a complete disregard for the existence of others.

The Outer Gods are ruled by Azathoth, the Blind Idiot God, who is said to hold court at the centre of the universe. His co-ruler, Yog-Sothoth, stands by his side, and the pair are surrounded by a group of their subjects who dance for the two to the tune of a demoniac flute.

The Outer Gods are vulnerable to the power of the Elder Gods' star stones, although the nature of this vulnerability has never been revealed. Those who are imprisoned are confined through the use of these artefacts.

The origins of the Outer Gods is shrouded in mystery. Some believe that they have existed since before time began, whilst others believe that they were vomited forth by some ancient entity of great evil, and yet more say that they originated untold millenia ago in a far-flung galaxy.
