Nodens, also known as The Lord of the Great Abyss, is a celestial being, one of the Elder Gods which appear in H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.
Description[]
Appearing as an old yet still powerful human male with flowing white beard and hair, Nodens is usually seen at the helm of his mighty hunting-chariot, a contraption created from a colossal seashell and pulled by beasts from Earth’s time of legend.
Nodens enjoys hunting the servants of the Great Old Ones and the Outer God Nyarlathotep, not through any desire to do good, but because these beings tend to offer the best sport. He is said to be particularly fond of chasing down Shantaks.
Whilst normally above the concerns of mortal creatures, Nodens has, on occasion, been known to help these lesser beings, particularly if doing so would result in a proverbial “poke in the eye” to one of the Great Old Ones or Nyarlathotep.
Trivia[]
- The concept of Nodens, along with his name, is taken from an ancient Celtic deity who was also a god of the hunt.
