Nidoran is the first Pokémon to be discovered where the genders of the species can be clearly told apart by physical appearance. The female Nidoran has shorter ears and barbs than her male counterpart and is covered with pale blue fur with lavender speckles.
Nidoran is a Poison-type Pokémon that can be found in grassy plains and savannas. It has several small barbs on its back that are filled with poison and a small horn on its forehead. The poison secreted by the spines and horn is extremely potent, and even a scratch from its horn or a drop of poison from its barbs can be deadly. However, this docile Pokémon only uses its poison when it feels threatened.
The following is a list of moves and abilities commonly used by Nidoran.
- Poison Sting - Nidoran jabs foes with its small horn, potentially inflicting poison.
- Bite - Nidoran aggressively bites its opponent.
- Toxic Spikes - Nidoran sheds its venomous barbs all over the ground, putting crossing Pokémon at risk of treading on them and being poisoned.
- Captivate - Nidoran uses its natural charm to lower the Special Attack stat of a male target.
The female Nidoran evolves into Nidorina at Level 16.
