Na Pali is the Nali homeworld in the Unreal series, appearing as the main location of the first game in the series, Unreal, and as arenas for the three games of the Unreal Tournament series. The planet is rich with the mineral Tarydium, used by many as both a power source and a major component in weapons production. In large enough quantities, Tarydium can also effect communications systems, explaining why, in the many times a ship has gone missing on the planet, no distress signal has ever been received from the surface, even when there have been survivors.
History[]
Prior to the events of Unreal, Na Pali was conquered by the Skaarj, and her native population forced to mine Tarydium for their new masters. Due to the massive amounts of Tarydium on the planet, many ships crashed on Na Pali, unable to broadcast a distress signal to their allies.
In the year 2214, the Terran prison vessel UMS Vortex Rikers crash-landed on the planet, with only a single prisoner, Prisoner 849, surviving, the rest either dying when the ship hit the planet or when the local Skaarj forces overran the wreck, killing all they found. Prisoner 849 fought their way across the planet, eventually using a Skaarj teleportation system to sneak onto their ship and slay the local clan's queen before escaping. However, their escape vessel was intercepted by the UMS Bodega Bay, who sent Prisoner 849 back to Na Pali to discover the fate of another Terran vessel, the UMS Prometheus. Upon finding the ship, Prisoner 849 was targetted for death by the crew of the Bodega Bay after they intercept a message between the UMS Starlight Base Command and the Bodega Bay regarding something called Operation Talon Hunter. After surviving the assassination attempt, Prisoner 849 would then kill the local Skaarj clan's warlord and escape, using their escape vessel's speed to lead a missile fired from the Bodega Bay back into the larger vessel, destroying it in the process.
In the year 2291, the idea of "concentual murder" was legalised by the New Earth Government, after a suggestion by the Liandri Mining Corporation. This would mark the official start of the Liandri Grand Tournament, a blood sport based on illegal no-holds-barred deathmatches held by Liandri miners. One of the ancient Nali temples would be chosen as an arena for the Tournament.
Sometime during or after the events of Unreal Tournament 3, the Necris would attack one of the old Terran research facilities on Na Pali, prompting the NEG to send military salvage units to reclaim the facility. The outcome of this battle is unknown, though based on the map WAR-Hostile thatsimulates this battle being unbalanced in favour of the Blue (NEG) team, it can be assumed the Necris were driven back.
