NEST 2 was an underground laboratory complex owned and operated by the Umbrella Corporation. It appeared in the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3 as well as the online multiplayer game Resident Evil: Resistance.
Background[]
NEST 2 was located underneath Spencer Memorial Hospital in Raccoon City. Unlike the primary NEST complex, this facility's purpose was not the development of viral agents but rather vaccines. A number of B.O.W.'s were also produced and tested in this facility; a series of artificial environments made to simulate real-world locations were built here where Umbrella would force kidnapped civilians to battle against various bioweapons and mutants in order to collect combat data.
In the fall of 1998, NEST 2 went dark in the midst of the T-virus outbreak that had left Raccoon City in ruin. On October 1st, former S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine entered the facility in order to obtain a sample of the T-virus vaccine in an effort to prevent the United States government from destroying the city to contain the outbreak. Jill had her final encounter with the Nemesis bioweapon here and destroyed the creature, but treacherous mercenary Nicholai Ginovaef stole the vaccine sample from her and destroyed it just before Jill and Carlos Oliveira could stop him. Nicholai was shot and wounded by Jill before being left to die whilst Jill and Carlos escaped via helicopter. Minutes later, Raccoon City was annihilated by a thermobaric missile and the NEST 2 facility was destroyed along with it.
Key Features[]
- Synthesis Room - This room was where Umbrella scientists would synthesize the vaccine for the T-virus.
- Storage Bay - Inside this room were several containment units held on racks that were used for storing B.O.W.'s in transit.
- Specimen Lab - Inside this chamber were a number of specimen tanks where bioweapons were stored and tested.
- Disposal Area - A large, circular chamber where biological waste materials were dumped and destroyed. Eight vats containing highly corrosive acid would flood the chamber to dissolve all waste.
- Weapons Testing Area - An expansive chamber where Umbrella tested experimental military hardware. An advanced railgun weapon was stored here which Jill Valentine would use to finally kill the Nemesis.
- B.O.W. Testing Area - A series of artificial environments set up to simulate biohazardous events. Civilians that had been abducted by Umbrella would be force to participate in a series of rigorous trials to test the effectiveness of Umbrella's bioweaponry. The simulated environments included a ruined cityscape, a horror-themed amusement park, a casino, and an Umbrella storage facility.
Creatures[]
The following creatures are encountered in NEST 2.
- Zombies - Human beings infected with the T-virus. The staff of the facility became infected by unknown means and began wandering aimlessly.
- Pale Heads - Mutated zombies with the ability to regenerate minor injuries. These were experimental specimens that escaped containment following the outbreak.
- Zombie Dogs - Canines infected with the T-virus that were used in combat simulations.
- MA-121 Hunter "β" - Reptilian B.O.W.'s that were created in the NEST 2 laboratory. Most of the specimens escaped into the hospital above-ground where they slaughtered many of the staff that had not yet succumbed to infection.
- MA-124 Hunter "γ" - These amphibious B.O.W.'s escaped from the facility during the outbreak, making their way into Raccoon City's sewers.
- Tyrants - Human-based bioweapons intended to function as the perfect super-soldiers. A number of incomplete specimens were stored in the main lab at the time of the outbreak, too deformed to be capable of combat.
- Yateveo - A plant-based bioweapon developed by Dr. Alex Wesker. This creature was only ever employed in combat simulations and never saw real-world use before the NEST 2 facility was destroyed.
- Nemesis T-Type - A Tyrant-class bioweapon enhanced by an NE-α Type parasite. This creature had been developed at Umbrella's European facility before being shipped to NEST 2 for combat testing and deployment. During the outbreak in Raccoon City, the Nemesis was deployed to hunt down and kill former S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine. It ultimately failed as it followed Jill into NEST 2's weapon test chamber where she destroyed it with an experimental railgun.
Trivia[]
- NEST 2 effectively replaces the Dead Factory location that appeared in the original Resident Evil 3.
