Mutons are a type of alien that appear as enemies in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. These hulking humanoid creatures stand at two meters tall and make ferocious combatants, acting as the shock troops of the alien invasion force.

Mutons appear as pink-skinned humanoids with glowing yellow eyes and clawed hands. Most of their bodies are concealed by bulky armour suits that protect them from inferior human weaponry. While Mutons are certainly strong physically, they are mentally weak and are considered to be the least intelligent members of the invasion force. Autopsy reports indicate that the Mutons have been genetically engineered by the Ethereals to function as the ideal soldiers.
In battle, Mutons typically wield plasma rifles and grenades. In the heat of combat, a Muton may let out a bestial battle-cry known as a Blood Call that stirs up other Mutons, making them more focused and eager to kill. If a Muton is injured, it will act in an unpredictable and intimidating manner, causing human combatants to panic.

- Muton Berserker
- An aggressive variant of Muton. They carry heavier armor than rank-and-file Mutons, as they are expected to charge into melee combat. They are heedless of danger and are continuously fed rage hormones through their genetically engineered endocrine system. Berserker variant carries no ranged weaponry, as it would be ultimately pointless considering their permanent state of berserk fury.
- Berserkers have had their brain modified to be next to unassailable with psionic attacks. This is obtained through modular brain structure, where damaged or disrupted sections can be quickly shut down from their neural network.
- Muton Elite
- An enhanced breed of Muton. Their physical characteristics have been augmented to include increased muscle density and hardened skin, and neural implants heighten tactical acumen of these Mutons. They are equipped with more advanced armor and weapons than rank-and-file Mutons.
- Elites serve as guards for some of the highest ranking aliens. A sighting of Muton Elite is often a good indicator that an Ethereal is nearby.
