The mimic is a monster from the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. This bizarre creature is a shape-shifter, its natural form being that of an amorphous blob of gooey flesh. The origins of such creatures are shrouded in mystery, but many believe the mimic to be a product of sorcery.
Mimics are essentially animals that exist solely to eat and survive. Usually solitary hunters, they frequently make their lairs in abandoned structures such as ancient ruins and underground dungeons. Mimics tend to remain in one spot for lengthy periods of time, using their shape-changing abilities to take on the form of innocuous items of furniture, most notably treasure chests or doors.
A mimic will remain in place until a potential meal comes along. Once touched, the creature will spring to life, still retaining the appearance of whatever object it turned into, but now sporting a gruesome mouth filled with teeth or limbs that it will use to fight and immobilize prey.
Abilities[]
- Darkvision - Mimics can see up to 60 feet in complete darkness.
- Polymorph - Mimics can alter their physical form at will, transforming into objects equal to the volume of their bodies.
- Acid Immunity - Mimics cannot be harmed by acid-based attacks.
Trivia[]
- The mimic has been a popular creature ever since Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition, so much so that it has been used in a number of other RPGs over time.
