Megatox is a villainous character that appeared in the UK-published Sonic the Comic. Originally a scientist working for Dr. Robotnik, he was involved in the development of a chemical weapon called Mega Mack, a substance designed specifically to kill Sonic the Hedgehog. Following a lab accident, the scientist was submerged in Mega Mack, but rather than being killed, he merged with the chemical and was transformed into an amorphous, toxic monster.
History[]
Megatox only appeared in three stories during the comic's run.
In the Issue #10 story "Megatox", Sonic had come to the Chemical Plant Zone in order to free Robotnik's slave labourers. After destroying the Badnik guards, Sonic led the freed slaves into a large storage vat where Megatox introduced himself before attacking Sonic. Because Megatox's body was fluid, Sonic's attacks could not hurt him. However, Sonic managed to defeat the creature by burrowing a tunnel through the floor of the vat and boring his way outside. As a result, Megatox was drained from the vat and sprayed across the zone. Sonic and the freed slaves didn't wait around to see if Megatox could recover.
Megatox would make his next appearance in the two-part story "Crisis in the Chemical Plant Zone" spread across Issues #114 and #115. Megatox survived his last encounter and hoped to avenge himself. His opportunity would come several years later - after Robotnik's downfall - when the Marxio Brothers took control of the Chemical Plant Zone. The Mega Mack factory was set to explode and the Marxios were unable to stop it as their workers were being frightened off by some unknown creature lurking inside. Sonic and Tails went to investigate and found the area crawling with creatures who seemed to be made of Mega Mack. The creatures demanded revenge against Sonic, but Sonic didn't remember who they were initially. The creatures then merged together, and Sonic recognised the monster as Megatox (although he actually called him "Mister Tox" at first).
Megatox revealed to Sonic that he had learned how to absorb the electricity from the factory and planned to use this power to blow it up. Doing so would allow Megatox to escape and flood the Emerald Hill Zone with Mega Mack, killing everything and leaving the zone uninhabitable for a hundred years. But before he would destroy Emerald Hill, Megatox wanted to kill Sonic. With the electricity he had absorbed, Megatox could make himself solid enough to strike at Sonic as well as being able to poison him by simple touch. Just as he was about to land a killing blow, Sonic struck Megatox square in the face before the creature could revert back to liquid form. The impact knocked Megatox unconcious, ending his threat. The Marxios were then able to power down the factory and clean up the Mega Mack. What became of Megatox after that is unknown.
Megatox would make one final appearance in Sonic the Comic's 130th issue. In the first part of the 3-part "Showdown", Robotnik - having become a god-like being after absorbing the power of the Chaos Emeralds, resurrected several of Sonic's past enemies, including Megatox. The villains all attacked Sonic at once, but Sonic was able to defeat them all by knocking the indestructible Brutus into the energy monster known as Plasma. This caused Plasma to discharge electrical energy all over the place, electrocuting them all and bringing them down.
Abilities[]
- Liquid-Shifting - As an amorphous creature made of liquid, Megatox was capable of moving through the smallest spaces and could not be harmed by any physical attack. As long as he had a constant supply of Mega Mack, he could shape himself in a multitude of ways, including dividing himself into multiple bodies.
- Density Shifting - In his second encounter with Sonic, Megatox revealed that he was able to absorb electricity from his surroundings which he could use to make himself more solid, thereby allowing himself to strike Sonic with more punishing physical blows.
- Toxicity - Being made of a deadly chemical substance, Megatox is poisonous to any living creature he touches.
