Masow is a demonic death-god that appears in the horror series, Monsters, being the central villain of the episode, "Rain Dance". He is stated to hail from a fictional Native American tribe. While no deity of such nature exists in real-world mythology, aspects of his design and nature were inspired by various deities found in Native American lore as well as cultures found in South America (such as the Aztec).
History[]
Masow is a seemingly demonic deity that was greatly feared due to the fact his presence caused everything around him to wither and turn to stone. He was thus given the title of "God of Death". It was long believed by the remote tribe he ruled over that sacrifices made to him would ultimately appease his evil nature and he would go into slumber, allowing rain to fall and the lands to recover.
However, as an immortal entity, Masow would always return and in the modern age a pair of greedy treasure-hunters who were exploiting the local people to steal their cultural heritage for profit would be given a seemingly inanimate statue of Masow from a mysterious old woman (who is implied to be the last of the long-gone tribe). While the old woman despises the two treasure-hunters for their greedy ways, she does warn them about Masow's evil ways, which they ignore and pay her a mere 20 dollars for him (despite later stating he would be worth at least "six digit figures").
Unfortunately for the would-be-usurpers, Masow had no intention of becoming a museum piece or part of a private collection. Instead he would animate himself and proceed to murder both treasure-hunters in a gruesome manner, turning both of them to stone.
After completing his task, Masow returned to his statue state and was picked up by the mysterious old woman, who proceeded to take him away, presumably to his next victim. Outside, the rain finally fell upon the desert, signalling Masow was satisfied with his sacrifices... at least for now.
