The Mackenzie Poltergeist is a legendary spirit from Scottish folklore, believed to be the malevolent ghost of a figure known as George Mackenzie, who entered into folklore due to his merciless oppression of religious minorities, which would result in an entire area of the Greyfriar's Kirkyard to become known as the Covenanters' Prison.
Somewhat ironically, considering his hatred of the minorities in question, his final resting place is situated within the Covenanters' Prison and is known as the Black Mausoleum, this imposing vault has become a site of international infamy among fans of ghost stories as well as paranormal researchers and even some religious leaders (mostly exorcists) due to numerous poltergeist-related attacks on anyone foolish enough to enter the vault.
While sealed off from general public in modern times the Black Mausoleum is a vital part of Edinburgh's tourist industry and authorized ghost tours frequently enter the vault, during these tours many guests claim to experience a feeling of unease or report feeling watched or prodded, some guests even claim to be violently assaulted, with some showing scratches or other phenomena associated with evil spirits.
Due to these attacks the Mackenzie Poltergeist has often been considered one of the most famous and actively malicious poltergeists in Scotland, like many poltergeists the creature seems very persistent as well, continuing to haunt the area despite numerous attempts to exorcise the spirit.
