Dirk Lylesburg is a character who appears in Clive Barker's 1988 fantasy-horror novel Cabal, it's 1990 movie adaptation Nightbreed, and their associated media.
Description[]
Appearing as a very old man with red-irised eyes, a mane of long grey hair, and similarly-coloured facial hair, Lylesburg's most distinguishing features are the series of gill-like slits which occupy each of his cheeks. These slits are actually the lids of his secondary eyes which, when opened, allow him to see the life's memories of an individual, even if that person cannot remember his past himself.
History[]
Lylesburg is the last surviving member of the twelve "Holy Freighters" who brought the severed pieces of Baphomet to Midian, reassembled them, and constructed the great necropolis to house the fallen god.
When Aaron Boone came to Midian, it was Lylesburg who initiated him into the ranks of the Nightbreed, and who later used his power to help Boone recover his lost history, and so become the saviour that the Tribes of the Moon so desperately needed.
Later, when the Sons of the Free enacted their genocidal pogrom on the Tribes, Lylesburg was shot in the forehead and killed by one of the Sons whilst attempting to let loose the Berserkers in order to give his people a fighting chance.
