The Jorōgumo is a type of yōkai from Japanese folklore that resembles a hybrid of human and spider. It typically appears as a tall, beautiful woman draped in a traditional Japanese wedding gown, but hides eight long, thin limbs ending in clawed digits. Depending on the source material, they may also have other arachnid features such as four eyes and fangs dripping with venom.

In various tales, Jorōgumo are depicted as evil, using their feminine charms to lure men to their deaths. One such method could be calling to someone from out of sight, pretending to need rescuing, only for the would-be rescuer to find themselves trapped in the Jorōgumo's lair and ending up devoured by her and her children: joro spiders that are capable of spitting fire.
