The Inklings are the main protagonists of the Splatoon video game franchise. They are a species of humanoids that are capable of turning into squids to play paintball and do other tasks. The player has the option to choose between either a male or female Inkling as their playable character at the start of the game, their counterparts are the Octolings and their enemies are the Octarians led by DJ Octavio.
Abilities[]
The Inklings are skilled at playing paintball and in their own game called the Splatfest. Throughout the series, the species is capable of turning into squids when swimming which is a trait all Inklings have and change back and forth, they also have good marksmanship and have chromokinesis which is the power of color and can manipulate their ink.
It is stated that the Inklings are capable of receiving their abilities usually at the age of 14.
Appearance[]
Both male and female Inklings can turn into their squid forms although each has a different color, their humanoid forms have a black marking resembling masks around their eyes, pointed ears and tentacles that can change color in battle depending on the Inkling team’s ink. The Inklings’ teeth are also pointed similar to a squid’s beak, their cephalopod forms resemble normal squids that have “hair” with two clubbed tentacles, four shorter tentacles and two large eyes that seem conjoined. Inklings are stated to lack a skeletal structure but have good eyesight and can leap five feet in a single bound.
The Inklings look like squids with four limbs prior to their transformation into humanoid form and look very much like squids in their infancy.
History[]
The Inklings and their counterparts are the result of cephalopods and other invertebrates residing in the sea becoming the new dominant species on Earth after high water levels killed all humans leading to the birth of the Inklings, Octolings, Octarians and presumably other species all respectively, each species evolved from regular sea creatures with the Inklings and Octolings becoming more humanoid while the Octarians seemingly stayed animalistic. At some point in time 100 years ago, due to the water levels, the Inklings and Octarians fought each other in a war called the Great Turf War which the Inklings ultimately won.

- The design for the Orange variant of the Inkling girl inspired the popular machinima and GMOD YouTuber, SMG4/Luke Lerdwichagul to create the character Meggy Spletzer who is currently one of, if not the most popular original character made by the channel. SMG4 also frequently uses Inklings and Octolings in his videos.
