In Greek mythology, Hyperion was one of the first generation of Titans, giants of unimaginable power who were ultimately cast down by their descendants, the gods of Olympus.

Like his brothers and sisters, Hyperion was an enormous humanoid creature who predated history and possessed an astonishing degree of physical strength. He was the lord of "watchfulness, wisdom and light," and fathered three of the second generation of Titans - Helios, Selene and Eos - by his sister Theia.

After Cronus led the Titans against their tyrannical father Uranus and subsequently claimed the cosmos for themselves, Hyperion and his kin lived in peace for a time.

However, after Cronus' actions sparked the war for the heavens which came to be known as the Titanomachy, Hyperion was one of the Titans to side with his brother against the upstart Olympian pantheon. After their final defeat at the culmination of the ten-year conflict, Hyperion and his siblings were imprisoned in the Greek cosmic hell, Tartarus.
