Hooty is a supporting character in the Disney animated series The Owl House. Referred to as a "house demon", he is not only an inhabitant of the Owl House, but is the house itself, or at least a part of it.
Background[]
Hooty is a demon that is bonded to the Owl House itself. His worm-like body extends throughout the walls of the house and he can feel much of what goes on within the building. It is unknown if he has always been part of the house or became part of it at some point as nothing has been revealed about his life from before Luz Noceda arrived in the Demon Realm. Even his age is uncertain, though house demons are supposedly capable of living for thousands of years.
What is known about Hooty is that he is widely considered to be annoying and is often the butt of many jokes. Throughout the events of the series, he tries to get involved with group activities, only to either be shunned or forgotten. Despite his irritating tendencies, Hooty is still very much regarded as a friend by Eda, King and Luz. At the same time, Hooty also acts as the guardian of the Owl House and protects the inhabitants from being attacked by enemies, such as Coven Scouts from the Emperor's Coven.
Misadventures at home[]
During most of Luz's time on the Boiling Isles, Hooty wasn't included in most of the human's adventures, with a couple of notable exceptions. One night, during a boiling rain storm, Eda transformed into her Owl Beast form due to not taking her elixir. In her feral state, she attacked Hooty by clawing at the front door, tearing it off its hinges. Fortunately, this didn't significantly harm Hooty, though he was knocked out up until Eda had turned back to normal. When he woke up, he called out to the others and complained about how cold the floor was.
Following her first visit to Hexside, Luz invited her new friends, Willow Park and Gus Porter, to a sleepover at the Owl House. Together, they performed a Moonlight Conjuring to bring an object to life, but the effect of the spell was not what they had expected. None of the objects they had placed in the ritual circle were animated; instead the spell had affected the Owl House itself, with the kids having effectively possessed Hooty. With the house under their control, the kids took it on a joyride through Bonesborough. After the trio got captured by Animal Control, they were almost killed when they got thrown off a cliff. Luckily, the teenagers were able to get back up and get inside the house, then returning the house to its original location.
Connecting with Lilith[]
After Eda and her sister Lilith lost their magic when Eda's curse was split between them, Lilith would live at the Owl House for a time. During this time, Hooty went to great lengths to lift Lilith's spirits and help her with her problems, though Lilith considered him a nuisance. When Lilith was gathering ingredients for a scrying potion, he followed her around against her wishes. He notices that Lilith has issues trying to gather fire bee honey, and offers to help. However, Lilith refuses the help, and berates Hooty instead, causing him to leave sadly. Later, Lilith realizes that she can't really carry out the task alone when she got surrounded by the fire bees, and calls out for help. Immediately, Hooty comes to her rescue and fights off the bees, successfully helping Lilith acquire the honey for the potion. The two then slowly bond as she tends to his stings. Eventually, Lilith accepts Hooty as her BFF and gives him the nickname "Hootsifer".
"Special delivery: PAIN!"
When King decided to show Luz and Lilith the castle where he had come from, Hooty decided to join them, demonstrating to Luz for the first time that he was able to separate himself from the Owl House. Removing himself from the front door, Hooty installed himself inside a birdhouse that Lilith carried on her back. During the excursion to the island, the group were attacked by a strange golem. Hooty helped to protect the group by launching several explosive flasks from his mouth at the creature.
Problem solver[]
Some time after Lilith moved back home with her mother, Hooty observed that Eda, King and Luz were struggling to cope with certain problems. Wanting to help his friends, he concocted a series of schemes that he felt would fix these problems. For King, his problem was not knowing his true origins, and so with the help of Tinella Nosa, Hooty set up a research exercise to determine what kind of demon King was. After some time, though, Hooty admitted that he couldn't determine what exactly King was and tried to pass off the experience as a means of getting King to "love himself", but this only upset King and he lashed out in an unexpected way, letting out a powerful sonic scream that damaged the Owl House's tower.
Hooty then tried to make Eda get some sleep as she had been burning herself out trying to come up with a means to disrupt Emperor Belos' plans for the Day of Unity. He prepared some cookies for her, mixing in some sleeping nettles. When Eda ate one of the cookies, she immediately fell asleep and experienced a lucid dream in which she confronted the spirit of the Owl Beast, eventually making peace with it. When Eda awoke, she found that she had assumed a new harpy-like form. She had control of herself in this state, but upon seeing her, Hooty assumed he had messed up and dashed away sobbing.
After overhearing Luz muttering about wanting to ask out Amity Blight, Hooty decided to play matchmaker by building a corny Tunnel of Love ride in the Owl House's basement. He then abducted Amity from her home and brought her and Luz down to the basement via a trapdoor. Amity was actually impressed with the ride, but Luz was embarrassed and thought that Amity would see her as weird, and so she began smashing the tunnel decorations. This ended up hurting Amity, who proposed that the idea of them dating was stupid all along. Hooty, now firmly believing he was incapable of helping, started having a breakdown and pulled his entire body out of the door of the Owl House in an attempt to rid it of his presence, causing the other half of his body to attach itself to the ground instead.
In his distress, Hooty's detached form began rampaging around the grounds of the Owl House, creating many long trails in the earth where he dragged himself and caused the entire house to start shaking. A stone slab fell from the tower, almost crushing Luz and Amity, but King used his newly acquired sonic shout ability to break it. A while later, Luz confessed to Eda that Hooty was trying to help her ask Amity out. Eda urged Luz to do so, and seized an opportunity to pull Hooty away, leaving Luz and Amity alone. Despite her nervousness, Luz gathered the courage to speak to Amity, and the girls finally asked each other out, starting their relationship. Hooty finally calmed down and sobs happily, now at peace with the knowledge that he had indeed helped his home's occupants.
Following the hijinks, Hooty wrote a letter to Lilith regarding the night's events. While posting the letter, he was approached by a stranger who seemed to resemble King. The stranger left a letter addressed to King, but when Hooty looked at the envelope, he saw a beetle crawl over it and excitedly ate the bug as well as the letter. Realizing his mistake, Hooty hoped that the letter was just junk mail.
Countdown to the Day of Unity[]
During the Coven Day Parade, Hooty and King piloted an effigy resembling Emperor Belos to distract the Coven Scouts while Luz and Eda grabbed Kikimora and Raine Whispers. Hooty then proceeded to bounce around town in the effigy, wreaking havoc and chasing after scouts. Later, he abandoned the effigy, and brought King to meet up with Eda, Luz, and Amity. He watched with the rest of his companions as Emperor Belos addressed the witches of the Boiling Isles about the Day of Unity being a month away.
Some time later, Luz told Hooty, King, and Eda about an adventure she and Hunter had been on inside Belos' mind, revealing the Emperor to be a human witch hunter. As Hooty and King hugged Luz to comfort her, Lilith arrived, and overjoyed, Hooty vomited up the letter addressed to King that he previously swallowed. After some persuading, Eda agreed to let King head to the location of his kin as stated in the letter. Lilith entrusted Hooty to go with King and Luz, and he swore to protect the duo with his life.
Luz, King and Hooty traveled to the location mentioned in the letter aboard Salty's ship, and once they arrived, the trio were transported to a land known as Titan Trapper Island. As King appeared to bond with others of his kind, Hooty went with Luz to ask their leader, Bill, to help them defeat Belos. Bill brushed them off and claimed that Titans were the greater threat, happy to have his people vow to take down the last Titan in order to free their "Grand Huntsman". After hearing Bill's description of the Titans, Luz realized that the Titan's description fitted King. She soon realized that the Titan Trappers were actually hunters disguising themselves as Titans and worshipped the Collector, and that King was a Titan himself.
Luz immediately excused herself, and fled with Hooty to go fetch King. Later, when King expressed frustration toward Luz for removing him from his supposed induction ceremony, Hooty informed him that Luz just saved him from being killed. As Luz ran away from the Titan Trappers, Hooty shielded her and King from the incoming attacks, and later sent Bill flying by barging out from the ground. Once the trio teleported back to their original location, they started falling from high up, and Hooty wrapped himself around the finger teleporter to slow their fall. He also shielded Luz and King from the incoming dust after King destroyed the portal.
The Day of Unity[]
After returning home, Luz, King and Hooty found the Owl House abandoned, having been ransacked by the Emperor's Coven. A clue left behind by Lilith led the trio to the Knee where they reunited with the Clawthorne sisters. Not long afterwards, the group were captured by Coven Scouts and locked up. However, before they could be taken to the Conformatorium, they were rescued by Raine and his new rebel group, the Covens Against the Throne.
After planning for Eda to be branded with a Bard Coven sigil, in addition to taking Raine's place during the draining spell, Hooty went to the head of the Titan with most of the CATs. He reminded Eda to scream loudly if she needed help, and tearfully bid her goodbye, before receiving a kiss on the head from her. Soon, Hooty, Lilith and the CATs were discovered and restrained. Raine was brought to the platform where the other Coven Heads had gathered, so that Belos' draining spell could commence as normally planned.
Reign of the Collector[]
After the Collector was released from his imprisonment, he put a stop to the draining spell, saving the population of the Boiling Isles. He then began reshaping the Isles with his magic. Lilith and Hooty saw the Collector hovering in the air with King at his side and, believing that King was in danger, flew up to save him. Thinking that the pair were trying to take away his new "friend", the Collector cast a spell that turned Lilith into a marionette puppet and Hooty into a jack-in-the-box.
In the months following the Day of Unity, the Collector had ravaged the Boiling Isles and turned it into his personal playground, with the few inhabitants who hadn't been turned to toys living in hiding and surviving on scraps. During this time, King had managed to convince the Collector to turn Lilith back to normal and return her to the Isles. Later on, King would retrieve Hooty from the Archive House and deliver him to Lilith. Even though the rest of the Collector's puppets had no free will, Hooty was able to respond to Lilith after a tear fell from her eye upon him.
Following Luz's return to the Isles and Belos' final defeat, the Collector began repairing all the damage he had done to the Isles and restored its citizens to normal, including Hooty. Upon being restored, Hooty immediately wrapped himself around Lilith in a loving hug.
Appearance[]
Hooty has a wooden light beige owl face with a darker orange upper side, brown eyes, and an orange beak. Behind the door where he is placed, there is a back frame of his owl body with wings and two peepholes attached where his eyes normally are. While Hooty has been described as a house demon, his specific type was revealed to be a bug demon. As a bug demon, owing to his extensive brown "neck", Hooty can stretch and move around in a worm-like fashion, and extend his mouth to allow visitors entry to the house or swallow items for storage.
Hooty's overall appearance is similar to a barn owl, as shown in "Hooty's Moving Hassle", his legs can be seen underneath the house. His overall anatomy is confusing and even nonsensical; throughout the series he has shown that while he technically is the Owl House, he can separate himself from it, detaching his head from the front door and installing himself in a small birdhouse that can be carried around. Pulsating veins and organs can be seen within the hole in the door when Hooty removes himself. Another bizarre aspect of Hooty's physiology is that while he is considered a worm, he actually has a skeleton. In the episode "Follies at the Coven Day Parade", Hooty is seen removing his skin and placing it on a clothesline, revealing an owl-like skull with gaping eye-holes attached to a lengthy spinal cord.
Personality[]
Hooty is shown to be a jovial and very welcoming creature with a falsetto voice, often greeting visitors to the Owl House and trying to be accepted as part of a group activity. He is rather talkative and claims to have many stories of his experiences to share, but he rarely, if ever, gets to share them since most people, including the inhabitants of the Owl House, consider him to be annoying and often neglect him.
Despite being ignored on a regular basis, Hooty cares deeply for the Owl House's occupants, regarding them as his family. He has gone to great lengths - figuratively AND literally - to protect his friends, such as defending the Owl House from Coven Scouts and shielding Lilith from one of the Collector's spells by enveloping her with his body. However, he has also been known to be intrusive; possibly owing to his desperate need for attention, Hooty tends to involve himself in his occupants' affairs without consent, most notably when he tried to help Lilith gather fire bee honey after she shunned him and when he tried to help Luz ask Amity out.
Hooty has also demonstrated a somewhat warped sense of humour. Once during a boiling rain storm, Luz almost rain into the rain until King stopped her, at which point Hooty suggested it would be funny to let her go. On another occasion, Coven Scouts attempted to break into the Owl House and Hooty stopped them, knocking them all out before laying out a picnic blanket and having a tea party with them.
Powers and abilities[]
- House Manipulation - Being the demonic component of the Owl House, Hooty has control over the utilities and architectural facets of the house. This includes opening and closing the doors and windows at will, turning the lights on and off, and even manipulating the electricity and plumbing.
- Elasticity - Hooty's most commonly used power is his ability to elongate his head, being able to stretch himself enough to enter the house, interact with his immediate surroundings or ensnare intruders. His elasticity makes him incredibly versatile in combat, allowing him to stretch circles around enemies. The full extent of this ability is unknown, though he has shown to be able able to extend himself from the Owl House all the way to Hexside.
- Owl Physiology - Hooty shares a number of traits with real-world owls, such as a heightened sense of hearing and puffing up his feathers in a defensive posture. His most notable owl trait is how he regurgitates objects he has swallowed, whether it be whole or enveloped in a pellet of partially-digested food. He often stores objects by swallowing them and seems to have control over his digestive process. He can even projectile vomit things he has swallowed over considerable distances.
- Longevity - It has been stated that house demons can live for thousands of years, although Hooty's age is unknown. He had been housing Eda for at least 8 years before Luz came to the Boiling Isles.
