HELL GUARD

The Hell Guard is an unusual form of demon encountered in DOOM (2016). This is not a creature that functions under its own power, rather it is a type of organic mech controlled by a parasitic worm. Without one of these worms, the Hell Guard is inanimate.

Three of these creatures are encountered during a boss battle at the end of the Necropolis.

Appearance[]

The Hell Guard exoskeleton is humanoid in structure, though it has no distinct head or neck. Where a head should be is a mere stump covered in bony spikes. The exoskeleton is tall and imposing; most of it is covered in keratin armour plating with only the joints being exposed. A glowing green rune is located on the chestplate which can open up to allow insertion of a parasite.

The parasite that controls the Hell Guard is a long, ropey worm with red-and-black flesh and several glowing green blisters. The "head" of the creature consists of four mandibles. These parasites are also responsible for turning human beings into Hell Razers.

Combat[]

When reaching the end of the Necropolis, the Doom Slayer must fight against three Hell Guards. At first, he battles against one, but two more attack at the same time after the first has been slain.

The first Hell Guard is armed with a mace and a staff. It is also surrounded by an impenetrable energy shield that prevents all damage. The shield drops briefly as the Hell Guard performs an attack, so the Slayer must dodge the attack and then counter with its own before the shield is raised again. The Hell Guard attacks by swiftly striking with its mace or by firing energy blasts from its staff if the player is far away. Ideally, weapons that deal heavy damage with a single shot such as the Super Shotgun and Gauss Cannon should be used during this battle.

After the first Hell Guard has been killed, two more will attack at once. One is armed with a staff while the other carries a mace. These two foes are slightly quicker than the first Hell Guard and will constantly pursue the Doom Slayer around the arena. The mace Hell Guard will perform multiple swipes with each attack while the staff Hell Guard will maintain distance and cast flame-spirals. While more intense than the previous fight, these Hell Guards are unshielded, so the player's shots need not be timed.
