Gyutaro is one of the main antagonists (alongside Daki) of the Entertainment District Arc in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He shares the title of Upper Rank Six of the Twelve Kizuki with his younger sister, Daki (formerly Ume). Hiding within her body and emerging in times of danger, Gyutaro is the true powerhouse of the sibling duo and one of the most dangerous enemies the Demon Slayers have faced.
Gyutaro’s grotesque appearance contrasts sharply with Daki’s beauty, symbolizing the trauma and resentment that shaped him. His bitterness toward the world and obsession with his sister reflect a deeply tragic and complex character molded by hardship, rejection, and poverty.
Appearance[]
As a Demon:
Gyutaro has a grotesque and emaciated figure, with greenish-gray skin covered in dark markings and protruding veins. His face is skeletal with sunken eyes, discolored teeth, and prominent ridges, making him appear corpse-like and terrifying. He wears tattered robes and carries his twin blood sickles as weapons. His fingers are long and claw-like, adding to his monstrous look.
As a Human:
In his human life, Gyutaro was sickly, thin, and severely malnourished. Often mocked and abused for his appearance, he developed a defensive, venomous personality. Despite this, he fiercely loved and protected his younger sister, Ume, the only person who never looked at him with disgust.
Personality[]
Gyutaro is cruel, spiteful, and full of resentment—particularly toward those he deems more fortunate. He harbors deep hatred for the beautiful, the strong, and the privileged, mocking them and taking pleasure in their suffering. Despite this malevolence, Gyutaro is fiercely protective of Daki, and his actions are driven by his love for her.
He sees himself and Daki as outcasts, bonded by shared pain. His overprotectiveness and control over her stem from a fear of losing the only person who ever loved him. His twisted sense of love is both endearing and tragic, revealing a childlike desire to be accepted and cared for.
Gyutaro is also strategic and more composed than Daki in combat, capable of intense focus and sadistic precision. Unlike his sister, he rarely underestimates his enemies and is far more cunning and dangerous.
Story[]
Backstory[]
Gyutaro was born in the lowest caste of the Yoshiwara red-light district, known for his hideous appearance and perpetual hunger. He grew up in filth, surrounded by death, mockery, and abuse. Nicknamed after his job—“Gyutaro”, the collector of debts—he was hated and feared.
Everything changed when his sister Ume was born. She was beautiful, everything he was not, and he took pride in raising and protecting her. The two survived by relying only on each other in a cruel world that offered them no compassion.
When Ume (at age 13) stabbed a samurai in the eye for attempting to harm her, she was captured and burned alive. Gyutaro, returning from work, found her near death and fought to protect her. A samurai attempted to kill him as well, but he killed the man and tried to flee with Ume’s dying body.
At their lowest, the demon Doma appeared and offered them the chance to become demons. Desperate and broken, Gyutaro accepted, transforming into a demon to save Ume. From that day forward, they became the Upper Rank Six, bonded not only by blood but by shared hate.
Entertainment District Arc[]
Gyutaro remains dormant within Daki’s body, emerging only when she’s seriously threatened. After Daki is nearly beheaded by Tanjiro Kamado, Gyutaro bursts from her body, immediately turning the tide of the battle. With his sadistic grin and twisted demeanor, he quickly overwhelms Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, and gravely wounds him.
Throughout the arc, Gyutaro displays terrifying power and strategy. He paralyzes enemies with poison, regenerates swiftly, and coordinates with Daki to make it nearly impossible to kill both of them simultaneously—their only real weakness.
As the fight drags on, Gyutaro is forced to confront not only formidable physical opposition but the resilience and emotional strength of the Demon Slayers. Despite all his power, Tanjiro and his comrades, through sheer will, teamwork, and sacrifice, manage to decapitate both siblings at the same time, leading to their death.
In their final moments, Gyutaro reflects on his life—his hatred, pain, and the choices he made. At first, he tries to push Daki away, believing she would’ve been better off without him. But Daki refuses, choosing to stay by his side even in death. The two walk together into the afterlife, hand in hand, reunited as the siblings they once were.
Powers and abilities[]
1. Blood Demon Art – Blood Sickles (飛び血鎌, Tobichigama)[]
Gyutaro's primary technique involves the creation and manipulation of razor-sharp blood sickles. These weapons can be materialized and dissolved at will and are used in conjunction with his own poisoned blood.
- His blood is highly toxic, capable of killing humans in seconds and severely impairing even Hashira-level Demon Slayers.
- He can launch blood slashes through the air, which are fast, unpredictable, and capable of slicing through stone.
2. Superhuman Physical Attributes[]
Gyutaro possesses incredible speed, agility, and strength, often moving in bursts that leave enemies unable to react. He can fight against multiple Demon Slayers at once, including a Hashira, without being overwhelmed.
3. Poison Generation[]
His blood and sickles are laced with lethal poison, which can paralyze or kill those struck by it. This is one of the reasons he’s so difficult to fight—surviving his attacks isn’t enough; one must endure the venom as well.
4. Regeneration[]
As an Upper Rank demon, Gyutaro’s regeneration is extremely fast. He can recover from decapitation if his sister is not also killed, making the duo extraordinarily hard to defeat.

Gyutaro and Daki are linked by a shared core. To kill them permanently, both must be beheaded simultaneously, a task nearly impossible given their coordination and differing combat styles. This biological bond made them especially dangerous in combat.
6. Tactical Intellect[]
Unlike many demons, Gyutaro is a calculating and patient fighter, assessing threats carefully and exploiting weaknesses. His ability to combine tactics with raw power makes him one of the most dangerous demons in the series.
