Geras

Geras is a character from the Mortal Kombat video game series. Introduced in Mortal Kombat 11, he is not a mortal being but rather a construct created by the Keeper of Time, Kronika. Throughout the eons, he has served Kronika's will, acting as an observer watching history unfold. When Kronika attempted to build a new timeline to erase Raiden from history, Geras was tasked with destroying anyone who opposed his creator's grand design.

History[]

Throughout history, Geras has observed all major events that have taken place across the realms, only intervening when such events go against the will of his creator, Kronika. After the God of Death, Shinnok, was incapacitated by Raiden, the balance between good and evil in the universe was disrupted. Kronika sought to restore balance by using her Hourglass to restart the timeline and create a New Era where Raiden did not exist. Geras would be tasked with acquiring items and components necessary for Kronika to accomplish her goal, as well as stopping anyone who tried to interfere with her plans.

Geras was first charged with acquiring pure Jinsei energy from Earthrealm, visiting an underground wellspring beneath the Shaolin Temple. The past incarnations of Liu Kang and Kung Lao attempted to stop him, but the construct froze time, immobilizing his foes so that he could retrieve the Jinsei samples and get away without further interference. Geras wished to kill the Shaolin warriors, but Kronika warned him not to as their deaths would erase their present revenant selves who, at that time, had allied with Kronika.

Later, Geras would recruit the Black Dragon clan, including present and past versions of Kano, to assist with rebuilding and upgrading the Cyber Lin Kuei forces after their factory was destroyed by Sub-Zero and Hanzo Hasashi. Both Kanos went about reviving the comatose Sektor and mass-producing his body's design, creating an advanced cyborg army for Kronika.

After the past incarnations of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade were captured by the Black Dragon, the Special Forces attempted to rescue them. Geras intervened, killing every soldier between him and the Cage family, determined to kill Johnny and Sonya so that he could erase their daughter Cassie from history. However, Geras was thwarted by Cassie, who blew him up with a grenade.

After being reconstituted, Geras would confront Raiden on Kharon's ship as Raiden's assembled allies crossed the Sea of Blood for Kronika's Keep. Raiden succeeds in defeating Geras, but the construct reminds the Thunder God that he cannot die no matter what he does to him. Aware of this, Raiden binds Geras in chains before throwing overboard into the bottomless Sea of Blood, dooming him to sink forever.

Abilities[]

  • Immortality - Geras is a fixed point in time, making him immortal. While he can be "killed", his body will reconstruct and he becomes more resilient with each death he suffers.
  • Godlike Knowledge - Geras has existed for eons and has observed the history of the universe unfold, making him knowledgeable of all major events throughout time.
  • Chronokinesis - Geras, like his creator, is able to manipulate the Sands of Time. In battle, he can freeze the flow of time, accelerate it or reverse it. He is also able to teleport himself and others, or even completely erase his enemies from history.
  • Superhuman Strength - Geras possesses physical strength greater than that of any human being.
  • Sand Manipulation - Using the Sands of Time as a weapon, Geras can create sand-based constructs and weapons. He can also create quicksand traps to immobilize foes or make sand-based duplicates of himself.
