Wisps

Wisps are a species of diminutive alien creatures from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. Making their first appearance in Sonic Colours, Wisps are benevolent creatures that come in a variety of shapes and colours. Each type of Wisp also possesses a specific power which they can share with certain beings, most notably Sonic the Hedgehog himself.

Overview[]

The Wisps reside on a number of small planets that exist in close proximity to one another. Their planet of origin is the aptly-named Planet Wisp. They are composed of a form of energy known as "Hyper-go-on" and appear to live in harmony with their natural environment. Wisps are also asexual and are birthed by a Mother Wisp, the progenitor of the entire race.

Wisps come in a variety of colours and shapes which indicate the kind of power they possess. In their various game appearances, they are shown granting these powers to Sonic, changing his appearance and allowing him to perform a number of feats he cannot normally do on his own. Such powers include being able to burrow deep into the ground, travel at near-light speed across energy beams, fly or manipulate gravity. Sonic's use of the Wisps' power is temporary and runs out in a short amount of time, though he can prolong the use of certain powers if he collects the right Wisps from capsules along his journey.

History[]

Wisps made their first appearance in the game Sonic Colours. During the events of this game, Sonic's arch-nemesis Dr. Eggman had built a giant orbital amusement park that had five small planets linked to it by great chains. Supposedly, Eggman had built his Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park as a means of making up for his previous villainous schemes, but in reality the park was merely a cover for his latest plot to conquer the world. The five planets chained to the park structure were inhabited by the Wisps and Eggman had enslaved the small aliens in order to harness their Hyper-go-on energy, using it to fuel a mind-control ray that would allow him to brainwash the Earth's entire population.

Sonic the Hedgehog and his friend Tails had arrived at Eggman's amusement park to investigate the doctor's claims of legitimacy, but soon discovered that their foe was up to his usual villainous tricks. However, upon encountering and freeing several Wisps, Sonic gained new powers that the creatures offered him so that he could free them from Eggman's control. At first, communication with the creatures proved difficult, but Tails was able to develop a translation program so that he and Sonic could understand their new Wisp acquaintance Yacker. After disrupting Eggman's operations on the Wisp planets and defeating the doctor himself, Sonic destroyed Eggman's amusement park and liberated the Wisps, allowing them to return to their planets and send them back to their proper places in the universe.

Since the events of Sonic Colours, several Wisps have migrated to Sonic's world and have played a key role in some of Sonic's adventures. Other Mobians besides Sonic have also made use of the Wisps' Hyper-go-on powers, though not quite in the same manner as Sonic has. In Sonic Forces, members of the anti-Eggman resistance make use of Wispons, devices specifically designed to utilise the power of specific Wisp types.

Wisp types[]

Image Colour Power Description
White-Wisp-Sonic-Colors-VI
White N/A The White Wisp is the most common of all Wisps. It has a single eye, a rounded body with three tentacles, and a pair of short antennae. White Wisps do not possess any particular ability, but in both Sonic Colours and Sonic Forces, Sonic can instantly recharge his Boost Gauge by collecting them, allowing him to run at supersonic speed for longer periods.
Bluewisp
Cyan Laser The Cyan Wisp has a rounded body with a tapered point up top, two eyes and three tentacles. Appearing in Sonic Colours and Sonic Lost World, this Wisp grants Sonic the Laser ability. Lasr allows Sonic to transmit himself along a beam of light which can be redirected by a series of reflective crystals placed along certain pathways in various stages.
Yellowwisp
Yellow Drill

The Yellow Wisp appears to have a triangle-shaped body with a single eye and three tentacles. It has diagonal stripes of a slightly darker shade of yellow adorning its body, making it appear like a drill bit.

In Sonic Colours and Lost World, Sonic can use the Yellow Wisp's Drill power to quickly burrow through the ground. While burrowing, Sonic must keep collecting Yellow Wisps to keep his Hyper-go-on gauge active. If the power runs out while he is still underground, Sonic will die. The Drill ability can also be used to propel Sonic through water like a torpedo.

In Sonic Forces, the player's Avatar character has access to the Drill Wispon which utilises the Hyper-go-on power of Yellow Wisps. With this Wispon, the Avatar can charge up power and perform devastating charge attacks, obliterating any enemies in their path. If the Avatar collects a Yellow Wisp, they may use the Drill ability to propel themselves across horizontal or vertical surfaces quickly, destroying any ground-based enemies standing in their way.

Dark-Blue-wisp
Blue Cube

The Blue Wisp possesses a cube-shaped body, three eyes and three angular tentacles. In Sonic Colours, Sonic can use the Blue Wisp's power to transform into an indestructible cube. By transforming in mid-air, Sonic can creat powerful shockwaves when he hits the ground, smashing any Badniks surrounding him. As well as this destuctiv move, the Blue Wisp can also create large blue blocks from Blue Rings, creating new footholds for Sonic to jump on or barriers to contain enemies.

In Sonic Forces, the Avatar may use the Cube Wispon, a hammer-styled weapon that shakes the surrounding environment with each impact. Any enemies surrounding the Avatar will be turned into blue cubes that can be shattered with the slightest touch. When powered up by a Blue Wisp, the Avatar can use the Cube Wispon to create blue cubes as footholds.

Greeen Wisp - Sonic Colors - (1)
Green Hover

The Green Wisp has a rounded body with a round protrusion on its top, a singl eye and three ball-shaped extensions below it that rotate beneath its underside.

In Sonic Colours and Lost World, when Sonic obtains a Green Wisp, he can use its Hyper-go-on power to turn into a hovercraft-styled shape and fly through the air, allowing him to reach higher pathways and otherwise unobtainable items.

In Sonic Forces, the Avatar may use the Hover Wispon, a weapon that releases pressurised blasts of air. In combat, the Avatar can blast groups of enemies away with an air burst, sending them hurtling into other enemies. If the Avatar obtains a Green Wisp, they can use the Hover Wispon to rise up into the air and float over obstacles.

Orange Wisp - Sonic Colors Artwork - (1)
Orange Rocket

The Orange Wisp has a blunt, conical shape that makes it look like a little toy rocket, which is strongly indicative of the power it possesses. Its body has two vertically-arranged eyes and three round limbs on its underside.

Appearing in Sonic Colours and Generations, the Orange Wisp grants Sonic the Rocket ability. With it, Sonic turns into a rocket and blasts off high into the air. This power is primarily used so that Sonic can reach high vantage points and smash through certain types of barrier.

Pink Wisp - Sonic Colors Artwork - (1)
Pink Spikes The Pink Wisp has a rounded body with five spikes on top, three tentacles beneath it and a single eye. Appearing in Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations, the Pink Wisp grants Sonic the Spikes ability, turning Sonic into a spiky ball that can stick to any surface. This allows Sonic to traverse some of the more maze-like areas he encounters on Planet Wisp and reach switches and devices that will allow him to progress further.
Wisp Purple
Purple Frenzy

The Purple Wisp is a type of Nega-Wisp, a Wisp that Dr. Eggman has enslaved and sucked dry of Hyper-go-on energy, resulting in this mutation. Though corrupted and aggressive, the Purple Wisp's power can still be used by Sonic.

The Purple Wisp has a more monstrous shape than other Wisps, having a horned body, no eyes and a wide mouth filled with jagged fangs. In Sonic Colours, when Sonic collects a Purple Wisp, he gains the Frenzy ability and will eat any objects or enemies in his path, growing larger as he does so until he returns to normal.

Wisp Violet
Violet Void

Like the Purple Wisp, the Violet Wisp is a Nega-Wisp created as a by-product of Dr. Eggman's experiments with Hyper-go-on energy. Its body appears as a dark, swirling mass with three petal-shaped tentacles, no eyes and a fang-filled mouth.

In Sonic Colours, the Violet Wisp can turn Sonic into a living black hole. In this form, Sonic hovers slowly through the air, inhaling any rings, items and enemies around him.

In Sonic Forces, the Avatar can make use of the Void Wispon, a weapon that can fire miniature black holes that suck in surrounding rings, items and enemies. If the Avatar collects a Nega-Wisp, they can teleport a great distance ahead.

Redwisp
Red Burst

The Red Wisp is shaped like a small flaming ember, the top of its body being tapered to two points. It has three eyes and three tentacles that resemble ribbons of flame.

Appearing in the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Red Wisp grants Sonic the Burst ability, transforming him into a living fireball. In this state, Sonic will immediately destroy any enemy he touches and can create powerful explosions that propel him into the air.

In Sonic Forces, the Avatar can make use of the Burst Wispon. This is the first Wispon that will be available to the player who can use it as a flamethrower, blasting Badniks away with a stream of fire. When the Avatar collects a Red Wisp, they can also use the Burst ability to create explosions and jump multiple times in the air.

Ivory
Ivory Lightning

The Ivory Wisp resembles a living lightning bolt with two eyes and three triangle-shaped tentacles. Appearing in the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Ivory Wisp grants Sonic the Lightning ability. This power of electrokinesis allows Sonic to levitate and travel across electrical arcs at incredible speed. The electrical field also magnetises Sonic, attracting gold rings towards him.

In Sonic Forces, the Avatar has access to the Lightning Wispon, a weapon that generates a whip of electricity that can destroy multiple enemies in one lash. When the Avatar collects an Ivory Wisp, they gain the Lightning ability and can travel along lines of rings or plough through rows of Badniks.

Crimson Wisp Art
Crimson Eagle

The Crimson Wisp has a triangular body shape with three spikes on the back of its head. It has three eyes and three tentacles.

Appearing in Sonic Lost World, the Crimson Wisp grants Sonic the Eagle ability. Sonic transforms into a crimson bird and becomes capable of flight, soaring through the air gracefully. However, the Crimson Wisp's Hyper-go-on energy doesn't last long and Sonic must collect more Crimson Wisps while in flight to keep the power going, otherwise he is likely to fall to his doom.

Indigo Wisp Artwork
Indigo Asteroid

The Indigo Wisp appears to resemble a ringed planet, comprised of a sphere-shaped body with an antenna on its top, a single eye, three tentacles beneath it and a ring wrapped around it.

In Sonic Lost World, the Indigo Wisp grants Sonic the Asteroid ability. With this power, Sonic turns into an orb with a ring encircling his middle and gains power over gravity, tearing apart his surroundings and attracting debris to him which encircles him like a planetary ring.

In Sonic Forces, the Avatar may use the Asteroid Wispon. This device can shoot bullets made from the debris it attracts and can target multiple enemies at once.

Magenta Wisp Art
Magenta Rhythym The Magenta Wisp's form closely resembles a musical eighth note, an indicator of the kind of power it wields. Appearing in Sonic Lost World, the Magenta Wisp turns Sonic into a musical note that can bounce around, flip upside down, collect musical notes as a way of moving around.
Grey
Gray Quake The Grey Wisp resembles a hexagonal rock with three eyes and three diamond-shaped tentacles. Appearing in the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Grey Wisp grants Sonic the Quake ability, allowing him to transform into a large metallic boulder that can crush any enemies in his path or generate shockwaves by jumping and landing.
Black Bomb v2
Black Bomb

The Black Wisp's body appears as a large black ball with a smaller black ball on either side of it. It has no eyes, a large fanged mouth and three petal-shaped tentacles. The presence of a mouth and absense of any eyes would suggest that the Black Wisp is a type of Nega-Wisp, but this has not been confirmed.

Appearing solely in the Special Edition of Sonic Lost World on the Wii U, the Black Wisp grants Sonic the Bomb ability. Sonic literally turns into a giant bomb and can roll over enemies in his way or explode at will. If the power runs out before Sonic decides to explode, he will lose his chance and will have to collect another Black Wisp.
