The Mondoshawans, whose name translates as “guardians” in the divine language, were a species of alien which appeared in the 1997 science fiction movie The Fifth Element.

Description[]

The true appearance of the Mondoshawans is unknown as they are only ever seen wearing bulky metallic encounter suits. These suits stand slightly taller than an average human adult, and are quite pudgy in appearance with an extremely small head.

They were highly intelligent creatures, who employed ships capable of interstellar travel.

History[]

Arriving on Earth around five thousand years ago, the Mondoshawans used a weapon consisting of four elemental stones and a single uniting element against a Great Evil which had attacked the planet, saving its inhabitants. They then left the pieces of this weapon sealed in an Egyptian tomb in the event that the Evil should return.

In 1914, the Mondoshawans returned to Earth after the outbreak of the First World War in order to reclaim the components of the weapon, stating that it was no longer safe there, although they were only able to retrieve the four elemental stones before leaving.

Three hundred years later the Great Evil did indeed return, and so the Mondoshawans returned to Earth to combine the elemental stones with the uniting element and banish the Evil. Unfortunately, the Great Evil had hired agents of its own - the highly aggressive Mangalores - to ambush the Mondoshawans, and they were all wiped out in a surprise attack. Whether they were the only members of their species is unknown, although all of the Mondoshawans seen in the film are killed.
