The MA-124 Hunter "γ" is a Hunter-class B.O.W. that appears in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Unlike the Alpha and Beta models, the Gamma variant possesses clear amphibious traits and was designed for use in aquatic environments. It was developed by Umbrella's European division as the company re-investigated the possibility of aquatic-based B.O.W.'s following the failure of Dr. James Marcus's Lurker experiment.

Overview[]

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis[]

The Hunter "γ" was designed with aquatic combat in mind. Its scaly skin is blue with a white underbelly and red neck sac. It has long arms like the Alpha model, but its hands and feet are more akin to the feet of a frog and have smaller claws. The Gammas have no eyes, relying on smell to track their prey, whom they will swallow whole with their large, toothless mouths. Due to their amphibious nature, the Gamma models were considerably difficult to transport and maintain outside the proper environment. They are ill-suited to hot and dry environments, making them less than ideal weapons.

Only a few Hunter "γ" models were created before Umbrella discontinued the project. They were left sealed inside a flooded laboratory beneath Raccoon City General Hospital during the Raccoon City Destruction Incident. While searching for a T-virus vaccine to cure the wounded Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira encountered a small number Gamma Hunters and was able to kill them before the hospital was destroyed.

Possessing clear frog-like traits, the Hunter "γ" was most effective when fighting in water, although it was never put to use in an active warzone. As long as its body remained wet, it could hop about, slide across terrain or wade through even shallow bodies of water. When attacking, it would slap prey with its webbed hands to injure them. Since it had no eyes to see with, it relied on smell and sound to track prey. When its prey was incapacitated, the Hunter "γ" would grab it and toss it into its wide mouth, swallowing it whole.

Resident Evil 3 (2020)[]

Hunter gamma remake

Hunter Gammas were redesigned for the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3. While they remain amphibious in nature, they appear to be based on salamanders rather than frogs. They are twice as large as their original designs and move considerably slower. They are encountered by Jill Valentine in the sewers of Raccoon City.

The Gammas bodies are covered in a slimy, pale, grey-blue hide that is highly resistant to gunfire. They have no eyes and rely on smell to track prey. They also have no arms, instead sporting an awkwardly-shaped fin where each arm ought to be. It is unknown how well these fins work as the Hunter Gammas are never shown swimming. As they approach prey, their large mouths open to reveal a slimy tongue that splits into four tendrils covered in bony barbs. They will use this appendage to grab prey, binding them and pulling them into their mouths.

The Hunter Gamma's hide cannot be penetrated by ordinary gunfire, though it can be affected by explosive and incendiary grenades. Otherwise, the best time to strike is when its mouth opens as its tongue is far more susceptible to damage from small arms than the rest of its body. Shooting out its legs will stun the creature and cause its tongue to pop out, leaving it vulnerable.
