A familiar is a mythological entity with magical powers, which according to tradition would be invoked by a person versed in the arcane, generally a wizard or a witch. They usually take the form of domestic animals or mythological or demonic creatures.
Description[]

"The Love Potion" by Evelyn De Morgan, at the feet of the sorceress you can see a Familiar in the shape of a cat.
The familiar is a being that obeys the designs of his master or person with whom he has made an agreement, acting as a servant and helper, or to favor him economically with his powers. It is usually not as intelligent as its master (who is assumed to have extraordinary intelligence in any case), although familiars of the fae type (goblins and other mythical creatures) are usually more intelligent than the average human being. A very popular type of familiar spirit is the imp of European mythology.
Familiars perform all kinds of tasks for their masters, from domestic tasks to arcane tasks such as bewitching people. If a familiar looks like a pet, such as a cat or an owl, they can act as a spy for his master. In this type of family, the relationship between these beings and those they serve can become very close, sometimes serving as a source of inspiration. It is said that the withdrawn nature of many wizards and warlocks would also cause them to see their family members as their best friends.
In some traditions they are also related to pacts or deals with demons or even the devil himself, acquiring demonic or terrifying creatures.
