Epimetheus, right, with his brother Prometheus.

Epimetheus was a character from Greek mythology. One of the race of Titans, like the others of his kind he was a godlike giant of enormous power.

Description[]

A member of the second generation of Titans, Epimetheus was the twin brother of Prometheus, the two being the offspring of the first-generation Iapetus. However, whereas his sibling was intelligent and forward-thinking, Epimetheus was something of a dolt. Tasked with giving a positive trait to each of the newly created creatures of Earth, when it came to humans, he lacked foresight and therefore discovered that he had nothing left to assign them. This led to Prometheus famously stealing the gifts of fire and the arts from the Olympian gods Athena and Hephaestus respectively, a celestial crime for which he was later severely punished.

In turn, Epimetheus's sentence was to receive the gift of Pandora as a companion (and possibly wife). Pandora, the first woman, who was described as a "beautiful evil," would through her later actions visit much misery and woe upon the human race.
