Enmu was the primary antagonist of the Mugen Train Arc in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He held the position of Lower Rank One among the Twelve Kizuki, the elite group of demons who serve under Muzan Kibutsuji. Enmu was personally chosen by Muzan to be the last remaining Lower Moon after the rest were executed, due to his fanatical devotion and sadistic tendencies.
Specializing in dream manipulation, Enmu sought to cause maximum psychological torment by trapping his victims in illusions before killing them, taking great pleasure in breaking their spirits first.
Appearance[]
Enmu had a delicate and androgynous appearance, with pale skin, turquoise eyes marked with the kanji for “Lower One” (下壱), and dark blue hair with bangs parted at the center. His clothing resembled that of a Taishō-era stage magician or illusionist, including a long, pinstriped overcoat, gloves, and high-waisted pants. One of his most distinguishing features was his gentle, soft-spoken voice, which belied his cruel and manipulative nature.
After merging with the Mugen Train, his physical form became more grotesque and dispersed, turning the entire train into his demonic body, while retaining a humanlike head and torso near the engine.
Personality[]
Enmu was a sadistic, cunning, and polite demon with a deep obsession for causing suffering, especially by twisting the minds of his victims. He did not kill out of necessity or hunger alone — he found ecstasy in psychological torment, preferring to lull victims into beautiful dreams before plunging them into despair.
He had an obsessive admiration for Muzan Kibutsuji, displaying loyalty that bordered on worship. Unlike many demons who feared Muzan, Enmu seemed to enjoy being punished or even threatened by him, viewing it as a form of attention and validation.
Though polite and soft-spoken, Enmu was manipulative, deceptive, and cold-blooded, often using others (both humans and demons) as pawns to achieve his goals. His cruelty wasn’t driven by rage — it was playful, which made his acts even more chilling.
Story[]
Mugen Train Arc[]
Following Muzan's extermination of the other Lower Moons, Enmu was spared and even rewarded with more of Muzan’s blood, making him stronger. He was tasked with eliminating Tanjiro Kamado, the user of the Hinokami Kagura (Sun Breathing), who Muzan feared.
To carry out his mission, Enmu infiltrated the Mugen Train, where over 200 passengers were traveling — including Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku.
Enmu’s plan was to put the Demon Slayers to sleep using his blood art, then kill them while they were defenseless. He used several human accomplices, manipulating them into helping him by offering them the chance to experience pleasant dreams in exchange for infiltrating the spiritual core of the Slayers and destroying it.
He nearly succeeded in killing Tanjiro and his friends, trapping them in dreams so vivid they struggled to escape. However, Tanjiro's strong will and Nezuko’s intervention allowed the group to awaken. Enmu then fused his body with the entire train, turning all eight cars into his flesh and bone, and attacked both the passengers and the Demon Slayers.
Despite his vast power, he was ultimately defeated by the combined efforts of Tanjiro and Inosuke. They located his flesh core near the engine and severed his neck, killing him and ending the threat to the train.
Enmu died in disbelief and despair, his final thoughts filled with regret and horror as he realized he had failed his master.
Powers and abilities[]
Blood Demon Art: Dream Manipulation[]
Enmu’s Blood Demon Art allowed him to enter, manipulate, and control the dreams of his victims. He typically used his power through flesh-formed tickets that would activate once touched, causing the target to fall asleep instantly.
Once trapped, the victim’s consciousness remained in a dream state, while Enmu or his agents could enter the dream and locate the "spiritual core", the essence of a person’s will. Destroying it would render the victim a hollow shell — unconscious and irreversibly broken.
Victims had to realize they were dreaming and perform lucid dream suicide (dying within the dream) to awaken. This was psychologically taxing and dangerous.
Flesh Fusion with the Mugen Train[]
Enmu’s ultimate transformation was the fusion of his body with the Mugen Train itself. In this state:
- His flesh spread across all eight cars.
- He could manipulate the structure of the train to form tentacles, eyes, and mouths.
- He had an almost limitless range within the train.
- His core (his "neck") was hidden near the engine car and protected by layers of tough flesh.
This form allowed him to attack hundreds of passengers simultaneously and made him extremely difficult to target, as his body was spread over a massive area.
Regeneration and Durability[]
Like most demons, Enmu possessed rapid regeneration, able to heal from slashes and injuries quickly. However, decapitation via Nichirin swords could still kill him.
Enhanced Senses and Intelligence[]
Enmu had sharp cognitive abilities, using his intellect to craft elaborate traps and psychological attacks. He preferred using manipulation and fear over brute force.
