The Earth Demon is a demonic creature that appears in the animated film Demon City Shinjuku. It is one of the three demons summoned by Rebi Ra to protect him as he carries out the unholy ritual of opening the gateway between Hell and Earth. It is the first demon to be slain by protagonist Kyoya Izayoi.
History[]
Shortly after Kyoya Izayoi and Sayaka Rama arrive in Shinjuku, they encounter the Earth Demon which attacks them. They escape when they are led by a local, Chibi, into the subway tunnels. However, the demon follows after them, killing Chibi's dog Kuro. The trio flee onto a train, which then starts to move.
Using its ability to open void portals, the Earth Demon boards the train and Kyoya is forced to battle the monster. He manages to lure it to the front of the train before scaling back along the side of the car. The tunnel is collapsed up ahead and the train crashes, with the Earth Demon appearing to be crushed. After the train has stopped, Kyoya looks towards the front to see one of the monster's exposed legs which disintegrates before his eyes. However, the creature is still alive as it appears from underneath the train car, picking it up and throwing it at Kyoya. Kyoya avoids being crushed, but the monster lunges at him, cutting through the wall and an electrical cable with its clawed arm.
The Earth Demon closes in on Kyoya, who thrusts his wooden sword into the beast's abdomenal maw. Drawing upon his chi through the art of Nempo, Kyoya pours spiritual energy into his sword. Enhanced by this positive aura, the sword slices through the demon's torso. Weakened by the positive chi, the monster staggers and one of its legs touches the nearby rail which the damaged electrical cable had fallen on. The Earth Demon is paralyzed by the high voltage, allowing Chibi to throw a hand grenade into the mouth in its abdomen. Seconds later, the grenade explodes inside the monster, blasting it to pieces.
Appearance[]
The Earth Demon's body resembles a combination of a human and a crab. It is a large creature with a mostly-human upper body supported by a lower body consisting of four segmented legs similar to those of a crustacean. It has grey-brown skin all over its body that is virtually impenetrable. Its left arm ends in a human-like hand while its right arm is thicker and ends in a pair of spikes for cutting and gouging prey. It also has a large, fang-filled maw in its midsection.
Abilities[]
- Brute Strength - The Earth Demon is physically stronger than Rebi Ra's other demonic disciples. It is strong enough to smash through concrete and can lift and throw a train car. Its hide is also impervious to regular attacks; only magical or chi-based attacks can dispel its evil aura.
- Teleportation - The Earth Demon is capable of opening black portals on any solid surface to transport itself between places. It also uses these to ambush prey and consume them.
