Domovoy (Ukrainian: Домовик, Domovík), (Russian: домовoй, Domovoi) is the deity of the home, who takes care of the life of the entire family living in the house. It literally means the spirit of the house in Slavic folklore. In Ukrainian tradition, the Domovoy is considered a reputed ancestor of the family, with a good-natured appearance, which emphasizes the character of comfort and well-being. The peasants believed in him, living the Domovoy on sparks, helping people in running the house. There are legends in which the inhabitants obtained Domovois for themselves: taking a small chicken egg, placing it under a mouse, and carrying it for 9 days. The tenth the new Domovoy will be a servant of the will of the owner of the house, as well as taking the demons that stalk children, and that sending them in an old stove. Tradition says that every house has a Domovoy. He does not turn into a demon unless he is disgusted with poor housekeeping, foul or sloppy language. The Domovoy is seen as the guardian of the house, and sometimes helping with minor repairs. He is traditionally treated like a member of the family, although no one sees him, and presents are left for him at night, such as milk and cookies in the kitchen.
