King discusses the demons of the Boiling Isles
Demons are creatures that inhabit the aptly-named Demon Realm in the Disney animated show, The Owl House. Coming in many different shapes and sizes, just about any creature other than witches or humans can technically be identified as a demon. Many human legends of demons are the result of something from the Demon Realm bleeding over into the Human Realm. Throughout history, many inhabitants of the Demon Realm have crossed over to Earth, whether intentionally or by accident. While human theology would have one believe that demons are inherently evil creatures, they, like humans, are not restricted to any one moral alignment. Furthermore, not all demons are sapient; the fauna and even some flora of the Demon Realm are to be considered demons, also.
Demon types[]
For the most part, demons are divided into three particular biological categories. These categories are Bugs, Bipeds and Beasts. However, there are many demons on the Boiling Isles that do not fit into any of these categories, so this classification system is very broad.
Bugs[]
Bug-type demons possess characteristics that are commonly associated with real-world bugs such as worms, insects, arachnids, and so on. They possess a natural instinct for communication through dance; for a demon outside this category, dance communication is very difficult and can lead to unwanted insults. According to Hooty, bug-type demons can also use magic, but only to a limited extent. Examples of bug-types include:-
- Adegast - A demon known as a "puppeteer" who uses illusions and flattery to manipulate others.
- Hooty - The house demon whose body makes up the Owl House itself. While he identifies as a bug-type due to having a worm-like body, his seemingly nonsensical anatomy makes this statement a topic of debate.
- Fairies - These creatures resemble the fairies of human myth, but are often considered pests by the inhabitants of the Boiling Isles. However, they are also considered useful by many witches who use their bodily fluids as potion ingredients.
Bipeds[]
Biped demons, as their name suggests, walk on two legs and, like witches, have a sac of magic bile attached to their heart through which they can utilize magic by casting spell circles. Appearance-wise, members of this type can range from animalistic to looking near-identical to witches. Examples of demons that fall under this category include:-
- Tinella Nosa - A demon of short stature who resides on the Boiling Isles. Her body is a relatively large head sporting a pair of short arms and legs.
- Kikimora - A diminutive demon of child-like proportions. She served as an assistant to Emperor Belos during his reign over the Boiling Isles.
- Osran - A member of the same bipedal species as Kikimora and Head of the Oracle Coven.
- Warden Wrath - Warden of the Conformatorium.
- Braxas - Son of Warden Wrath.
- Tibbles - A short, pig-like demon who works as a merchant and is a notorious con artist.
- Principal Faust - Principal of Hexside School of Magic and Demonics during Eda Clawthorne's childhood.
Beasts[]
Beast demons are usually animal-like in appearance and behaviour, though there are examples of beast demons that possess the same sentience and intelligence as humans and witches, as well as the ability to speak. One such example is the Snaggleback. According to Hooty, only a blood sample can unequivocally confirm whether a demon belongs to this category. Examples from this category include:-
- Snaggleback - A sentient, monkey-like demon with a detachable shell.
- Slitherbeasts - Creatures that somewhat resemble yetis from human mythology.
- Giraffes - These long-necked beasts were banished from the Demon Realm millennia ago.
- Basilisks - A species of shapeshifting, serpentine demons that feed on the magical energy of others. Vee is one such member of this race.
- Echo Mice - Small rodents that consume books and can randomly project the knowledge they have consumed from their eyes.
- Ratworms - These beasts are often used as riding mounts by the inhabitants of the Boiling Isles.
- Trash Slugs - Enormous gastropods that feed on garbage.
- Selkidomus - Peaceful creatures that reside in the seas surrounding the Boiling Isles.
