Demons (鬼, Oni) are the primary antagonistic creatures in the manga and anime series Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer), created by Koyoharu Gotouge. They are supernatural beings who were once human, transformed through exposure to the blood of Muzan Kibutsuji, the first and progenitor of all demons.

Demons are characterized by their immense strength, rapid regeneration, and their need to consume human flesh to survive and grow stronger. They are hunted by the Demon Slayer Corps, an ancient organization dedicated to protecting humanity.

Overview and Origin[]

Demons are former humans whose physical forms and abilities have been radically altered. Upon transformation, they gain powerful regenerative abilities, enhanced senses, and superhuman physical traits. However, they also become vulnerable to sunlight, which can kill them instantly, and Nichirin swords, specially forged weapons used by Demon Slayers.

Each demon possesses a Blood Demon Art (血鬼術, Kekijutsu), a supernatural ability unique to them, often derived from their personality or past life. All demons originate from Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon who has lived for over a thousand years. Muzan creates demons by injecting his own blood into humans. Those who survive the transformation are granted immense power, but are also bound to Muzan’s will. Any demon who utters his name is instantly killed through a curse he embedded into their cells.

Powers and Abilities[]

Demons possess numerous abilities that turn them into formidable and dangerous enemies that are hard to defeat. It includes

1. Superhuman Physicality[]

  • Strength: Demons possess immense physical strength, able to overpower most humans with ease.
  • Speed & Agility: They move faster than the eye can follow, capable of dodging attacks and ambushing prey.
  • Stamina & Endurance: Demons can fight for extended periods without tiring.

2. Regeneration[]

  • Demons can regenerate from virtually any wound, including severed limbs or deep impalement.
  • Higher-ranked demons can regenerate almost instantaneously, even from decapitation if not done by a Nichirin blade.

3. Immortality[]

  • They do not age or suffer from disease, making them effectively immortal unless killed by sunlight, Nichirin weapons, or poison.

4. Enhanced Senses[]

  • Many demons have heightened senses such as smell, hearing, and sight, allowing them to track prey or sense danger.

5. Blood Demon Arts (Kekijutsu)[]

  • Unique supernatural powers that vary from demon to demon.
  • Examples: manipulation of elements (ice, blood, flesh), illusions, spatial warping, summoning, and clones.

6. Fear Inducement / Intimidation[]

  • Demons—especially the Twelve Kizuki—exude an oppressive aura that can terrify or paralyze weaker opponents.
  • Some, like Kokushibo or Doma, can instill sheer dread just by being present, overwhelming even veteran demon slayers.
  • Fear can be both a passive effect and an intentional act to break the enemy’s spirit.

7. Flesh Manipulation[]

  • Many demons can control their own flesh to create weapons (e.g., claws, tentacles, mouths, eyes) or defend themselves.
  • Some can create flesh-based minions or split themselves into multiple bodies.

8. Shapeshifting[]

  • Demons can alter their appearance, size, or even gender. This includes extending limbs or disguising as humans.

9. Mind Reading / Sensing Emotions[]

  • Some demons can sense emotions or even read minds to a limited degree, especially during battle.

10. Paralysis or Hypnosis (varies by demon)[]

  • Through eye contact or sound, some demons can stun, hypnotize, or mentally manipulate victims.
    • Example: Enmu (Lower Rank One) uses dreams to trap minds.

11. Poison Creation[]

  • Several demons produce poisons via their claws, blood, or abilities.
    • Example: Daki’s sashes and Gyutaro’s blood blades are venomous.

Weaknesses[]

All demons are vulnerable to sunlight, as it burns their skin and disintegrates them. Also, another way to kill them is beheading them, although some demons managed to survive decapitation, for example Rui, Daki and Gyutaro.

Hierachy[]

Most demons roam freely or serve Muzan in minor roles. They typically lack a Blood Demon Art and are easier to kill.

Twelve Kizuki (十二鬼月, Jūni Kizuki)[]

The elite demons under Muzan’s direct command, split into two groups:

  • Upper Ranks (上弦の鬼, Jōgen no Oni) – The six most powerful demons, having survived for decades or even centuries. Each poses an extreme threat and has killed many Hashira (elite Demon Slayers).
  • Lower Ranks (下弦の鬼, Kagen no Oni) – Weaker than the Upper Ranks but still formidable.

Each member of the Twelve Kizuki bears a number on their eye indicating their rank.
