Demogorgons are predatory creatures originating from the Upside Down World, an alternate dimension. Demogorgon obey Vecna, and are part of his hive mind. Under his influence, Demogorgon are murderous, violent, and have limited intelligence.
In 1983, a fully grown Demogorgon escaped the Upside Down and got trapped in Hawkins, Indiana after a portal to the Upside Down World was accidentally opened. This Demogorgon was eventually defeated and destroyed, but not before it could influence the damage to the human world. Will Byers, a rescued victim of the Demogorgon, became a spy for the Mind Flayer. Somehow, Will's possession of the Mind Flayer to unleash a pack of premature Demogorgon (Demodogs) on Hawkins.

A test subject with psychic powers nicknamed Eleven, was placed in a sensory deprivation tank as one of the Hawkins National Laboratory experiments. This allowed Eleven to delve into a deeper psychic state. Even though she successfully listened to a Russian Agent as instructed, she inadvertently encountered the Monster. Eleven's instincts urged her to stay away from him; She panicked, and the experiment was aborted.
Dr. Martin Brenner was intrigued by the Monster, repeating the experiment on November 6, 1983. This time, Brenner ordered Eleven to make contact. As Eleven psychically approached the Monster, she could see it feeding on an otherworldly egg. With great hesitation, she made contact. At that exact moment, a door to the monster's dimension opened in the wall of the tank room, allowing the monster to pass through. Eleven managed to get out of the tank and escape the lab amid the chaos that followed. An unnamed scientist was not so lucky; The Monster caught him while trying to operate an elevator.

The Monster had the ability to travel between dimensions on a whim, creating temporary portals in the fabric of reality. The Monster reached Mirkwood, a road near a local forest, where he stalked Will Byers on his way home. The Monster chased Will when he entered his house, forcing Will to run into his garden. He hid in the shed, carrying a rifle in self-defense, but the monster just appeared behind him, carrying him to the top.
Once in the Upside Down World, Will managed to evade the creature for nearly a week, and began trying to communicate with his mother. Joyce and Will had some success, with Will manipulating electricity in the dimension of his house, although these attempts sometimes attracted the Monster. In an early attempt, Joyce saw the wall of her house warp and distort as the monster began to break apart, terrorizing her. In a later attempt, the Monster completely smashed it, although Joyce managed to get ahead of it.
Scientists in Hawkins' lab began investigating the dimension, discovering exactly what it contained. A scientist entered through the door, wearing a hazmat suit attached to a chain rope. The scientist was attacked and killed by the monster almost immediately after entering the dimension. The Monster hunted and killed other people and creatures, being particularly drawn to blood. Barbara Holland, hunters Dale and Henry, and a wounded deer were victims. After Nancy Wheeler entered the Upside Down World through a time portal, she witnessed the Monster as she ate a deer. The Monster noticed her, chasing her until she returned through the portal.
Finally, when Will succumbed to exhaustion, he lay in his makeshift fortress. The Monster found him, breaking through the fortress wall and taking him to the Hawkins Library Library.
Nancy and Jonathan Byers later exploited the monster's attraction to blood to ambush him. With Steve's help, they severely injured the beast, turning it on - yet it survived and returned to the Upside Down World. The Monster left the Byers' house and headed for the library, leaving a trail of blood.
She eleven killed a large number of government agents at Hawkins Middle School, defending herself and her friends Dustin, Lucas Lucas, and Mike Wheeler. The monster was drawn into pools of spilled blood, breaking through the wall. The monster began to attack violently, attacking first Dr. Brenner and then several agents. For a time, the four children outgrew and evaded the creature, hiding in the science teacher's class. Eventually the Monster found them, entering the room and attacking them. Eleven faced the creature, pinning it against the slate with her mind. After saying goodbye to her friends, she proceeded to disintegrate the beast, disappearing in the process as well.
Appearance[]
The monster is tall and thin with a humanoid figure. His head has no facial features and opens like a flower to reveal nothing but teeth. It has clawed hands and feet, and its skin appears to be covered in fluids. It's very possible that Demogorgon can't see, and instead use sound to hunt and kill their prey.
After being set on fire by Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve, the Monster's body was covered in burn marks, giving it a slightly darker colored appearance.
