Dagon, also known as Father Dagon, is a creature which appears in the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Cthulhu Mythos.

Description[]

A grotesque humanoid over fifty feet tall, Dagon resembles an enormously oversized Deep One with a fish like face, flapping gills and a scaled, slimy hide. There is in fact much debate over whether Dagon is a true Great Old One, or simply a Deep One grown to colossal proportions, as some Deep Ones continue to grow in size over the course of their life.

Dagon, along with his consort Mother Hydra and Great Cthulhu himself, is a member of the Deep Ones “holy trinity,” the trio of beings worshiped as gods by that oceanic species. In addition, Cthulhu has entrusted the guardianship of his “daughter” Cthylla to Dagon and Mother Hydra, and the pair are thought to hold watch over her in one of their great underwater cities somewhere in the North Atlantic, although one eye witness account apparently places Dagon on an island in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere east of Java.

In addition to their following of Deep Ones, Father Dagon and Mother Hydra are worshiped by a cult of humans and human-Deep One hybrids known as the Esoteric Order of Dagon, although since the United States government enacted its purge on Innsmouth, this cult is much smaller than it was in days gone bye, and much more secretive regarding its practices.

Dagon was one of the targets of the Wilmarth Foundations’ Project X in early 1980. The objective of the operation was to annihilate Father Dagon, Mother Hydra and Cthylla, but was ultimately unsuccessful, and the three were able to escape to safety.
