Crom Cruach is a pagan deity and the overarching antagonist of Cartoon Saloon's first animated film The Secret of Kells. It is an ancient being who killed a race of deities called the Tuath De Danann except for their daughter Aisling who managed to survive its slaughter and is believed to be the entity that the Northmen or Vikings worship.

Abilities

Crom Cruach is a powerful deity who is believed to have immense power although it is only shown to be much larger than its victims which it uses to its advantage by devouring them and is capable of spatial locking. It was however easily killed by a piece of chalk although it still killed an entire race of fellow gods on its own.

Appearance

Crom's design is meant to resemble old Celtic artwork, it resembles a giant blue serpent-like monster and has a jointed body with its eye in its forehead and its teeth stretching slightly out of its mouth and possesses multiple tongues. It also looks to be CG animated rather than being hand drawn.

History

Background

Crom Cruach is believed to have existed for a very long time similar to Aisling's race and one day, when they confronted it, it managed to devour and kill them all, including Aisling's mother who fought hard which caused Aisling to have a fear of it and never try to go anywhere near its abode, its worshippers would later go around Ireland killing people and stealing gold for their leader.

The Secret of Kells

The entity is first mentioned by Abbot Cellach when talking to Brother Aidan upon his arrival at Kells and is later encountered by Cellach's nephew Brendan who enters its cave to try and take its eye in order to finish the Book of Iona after a fearful Aisling begs him to not go. Crom Cruach towers over Brendan and tries to devour him only for it to be outsmarted by Brendan who draws a line around Crom using chalk, causing it to mindlessly devour itself alive making it resemble the Ouroboros wheel before being completely destroyed. Its eye is later used to completely finish the book at the end of the film after many years pass.

Wolfwalkers

Crom's eye is briefly shown when Mebh pulls it out from Robyn's bag when she goes through her things.

Trivia

Crom is based on the real life god of the same who Saint Patrick apparently fought.
