Copper dragon

Copper dragons are a type of metallic dragon in the roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons. Highly intelligent and quick-witted, they are the most intriguing of the dragon species, or so they would have people believe. Though supposedly good-natured like other metallic dragons, they are roguish and cavalier by nature, using charisma and wit to get what they want.

Description[]

A copper dragon is lean and sinuous. It has a prominent pair of swept-back, scale-covered horns, cheek ridges, and jaw frills. Its scales are large, glossy bands or plates, smooth to the touch. Its eyes are bright turquoise. As a copper dragon ages, its scales take on a green tinge, like verdigris on an old statue.

Copper dragons are typically of chaotic-good alignment, though this is not always apparent given their roguish behaviour. They are sly and cunning, using their charisma to charm others and they enjoy a good joke. When encountering adventurers, they tend to challenge them with riddles or play pranks on them. More sociable than other dragons, they enjoy the company of others and sometimes offer travelers temporary lodging within their lairs in exchange for entertainment.

Not all copper dragons are quite so frivolous, however; some can be outright malicious and use their natural charm to trick others or would use lies and manipulation to gain something, or simply for their own amusement.

Lairs and Terrain[]

Copper dragons prefer to make their lairs in temperate environments, such as hillsides or lower mountains. They frequently establish domains near human territories and some even live within cities, building homes beneath the streets. Since most copper dragons cannot assume humanoid forms, they generally do not live among the general population. Ancient castles and underground dungeons are also highly favourable to copper dragons.

Favoured Treasure[]

Copper dragons are drawn towards finely crafted metalwork and jewelry, but they will gladly adorn their lairs with any kind of fine art. Being the jovial tricksters that they are, they sometimes place less favourable items away from their main hoards in order to bait adventurers and treasure hunters, luring them in so that they can strike up a conversation.

Diet[]

Copper dragons that live in the wild tend to hunt small game and fowl, though coppers that live in or near human settlements may indulge in human foods. Those that consume human food particularly enjoy fine wines and other liquor. Copper dragons do not dare eat humans or other intelligent beings. After all, devoured victims cannot appreciate a copper dragon's wit and beauty.

Abilities[]

  • Flight
  • Blindsight - A copper dragon's vision cannot be dulled or obscured. They can see perfectly in complete darkness and through smoke.
  • Immunity - Copper dragons are unaffected by acid.
  • Breath Weapons - Copper dragons can expel a cone of mist that leaves opponents sluggish and slow. They can also breathe a line of acid that rapidly dissolves targets.
