Chernabog is a giant nocturnal demon that appears in the Night on Bald Mountain segment of the 1940 Disney animated musical film Fantasia. He is a massive, black, horned and winged demon. Chernabog is a name from Slavic mythology that means "Black God".

Overview[]

Much has been speculated about Chernobog, but little can be said definitively. The only historical sources, which are Christian ones, interpret him as a dark, accursed god, but it is questionable how important (or evil) he was really considered to be by ancient Slavs.

In Fantasia, Chernabog appears as a gargantuan demonic creature looming over Bald Mountain and the small village at its base. During this segment, he casts a vast shadow over the village and conjures many evil spirits, ghosts and demons that perform a haunting dance before him. A chasm opens revealing fire and brimstone and Chernabog watches with delight as many of the conjured souls and creatures fall into the infernal depths. The dark festivities are brought to an end when the church bells chime, heralding the dawn. As the sun begins to rise, Chernabog and his minions disappear.

Other appearances[]

Chernabog has appeared in several Disney productions since Fantasia. He has made a number of comical appearances in the cartoon series House of Mouse and serves as the main antagonist of the book series Kingdom Keepers. He also appeared as a boss in the Disney/Square-Enix game Kingdom Hearts where he attacks the protagonist Sora with dark magic and fire spells to keep him from reaching the final battle against Ansem.
