Chain Chomps are creatures found throughout the Mario series. They are a black orb with very sharp teeth as well as a chain attached to them and they behave similarly to dogs. Chain Chomps are commonly chained to posts but whenever Mario (or someone else) comes by, they lash out in attempt to bite the hero. A Chain Chomp's post can be ground pounded to set them free which also allows the Chain Chomp to break open nearby gates allowing the heroes to reach certain items that were previously sealed off. Chain Chomps are commonly invincible and very few attacks can actually defeat them. There are also different types of Chain Chomps such as the Fire Chomp which can actually fly and spit fireballs as well as the Chomps which are much larger than a Chain Chomp and actually roll around. Since their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, Chain Chomps have been an iconic and easily recognizable enemy in Mario lore and have appeared in almost every game since.
Trivia[]
- Chain Chomps were inspired by a childhood experience by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. He was walking through the neighbourhood and a dog lunged out to attack but its chain kept it restrained.
