Ogres are violent, man-eating giants - though in most modern tales ogres are depicted as slightly smaller than true Giants, they are also often seen as stupid and obese with an unending desire to consume meat - they are considered an embodiment of greed, savagery and fears of cannibalism.
Of course, like many monsters, pop-culture has also given alternative takes on ogres, sometimes making them neutral or even heroic beings, the most famous of these by far would be Shrek (from both the original novel and the more well-known film series of the same name).
