The Bubak (or the Sack Man, as he is referred to by locals) first arrived into the human world, according to pagan Slavic priests, amidst the bubonic plague. He was sent by Chernobog as a messenger to the people, giving them the word of Chernobog's will. The spirit instead began developing sadistic tendencies and used the powers granted to him by Chernobog for his own use. Chernobog punished Bubak severely, stripping him of his god-like abilities and cursing him to roam the world of man for eternity.

Bubak's sociopathic ideals began to slowly consume him as he began feasting off misguided souls, mostly those of children as they were easier targets and generally more naive than adults. Taking the form of a scarecrow, he lured in children with a low pitched whistle and murdered them by the dozens. Bubak soon discovered that, once the body was deceased, the souls would as well. Bubak was eventually confronted by a horde of enraged parents, all of which he massacred. A pagan priest was called, restricting him to the town of Ustroń where he took residence in the late Kochan house. For generations, the Kochan's would silently butcher their own, mainly children or family rivals, and preserve them in straw so that the sack man may feast on their souls.
